Villalpando, who with Jerónimo Prado wrote a commentary on the book of Ezekiel in which they calculated the size of the temple. Plate from Austrian architect Johann Bernard Fischer von Erlach's 'Entwurf einer historischen Architektur' ('Outline of Historical Architecture', first published 1721) , the first comparative architecture of all periods and nations. It was the most influential 18th century book illustrating Islamic architecture, treating Islamic and other eastern buildings with the same detail as the more canonical ancient buildings also included in the book.

A view of the Temple of Solomon, drawn after Vilalpando, with Jerusalem in the background, with a descrition in German & French. It was published in Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach's 'Entwürst Einer Historischen Architectur', a study of the architecture of the ancient world. Fischer von Erlach (1656-1723) was a successful Austrian architect: his baroque works include the Schönbrunn Palace, Karlskirche, and the Austrian National Library in Vienna. He also studied ancient architecture, publishing 'A Plan of Civil and Historical Architecture' in 1721, taking on classical influences. He specifically lists the Temple of Solomon as one of his inspirations for the Karlskirche.

A view of the Temple of Solomon, drawn after Vilalpando, with Jerusalem in the background, with a descrition in German & French. It was published in Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach's 'Entwürst Einer Historischen Architectur', a study of the architecture of the ancient world. Fischer von Erlach (1656-1723) was a successful Austrian architect: his baroque works include the Schönbrunn Palace, Karlskirche, and the Austrian National Library in Vienna. He also studied ancient architecture, publishing 'A Plan of Civil and Historical Architecture' in 1721, taking on classical influences. He specifically lists the Temple of Solomon as one of his inspirations for the Karlskirche.

Laid on card in near-contemporary presentation by or for collector 'E J Myles'; inscribed to verso with his name (probably signature) in ink, and numbered '73'. Print trimmed to image; extremities/(card) margin over painted in black, as often. Some staining and scuffing.
Imagined biblical scene during a sacrifice at the Court of the Priests in Solomon's Temple, on mount Moriah in Jerusalem. According to the Bible, it contained the Altar of burnt-offering (2 Chr. 15:8), the Brazen Sea laver (a basin for ceremonial ablution, 4:2-5, 10) and ten other lavers (1 Kings 7:38, 39). A brazen altar stood before the Temple (2 Kings 16:14), its dimensions 20 cubits square and 10 cubits high (2 Chr. 4:1). The Great Court surrounded the whole Temple (2 Chr. 4:9). It was here that people assembled to worship. (Jeremiah 19:14; 26:2).

The Golden Gate, the oldest existing gate in Jerusalem's Old City Walls, which Jesus passed through on Palm Sunday, fulfilling a prophecy that the Messiah would enter the city through this gate. As this tradition continued among the city's Jews, the Ottoman Sultan Suleiman I had the Golden Gate bricked up in 1541 to prevent it ever happening. Carl Friedrich Heinrich Werner (1808-94) was a German watercolourist who visited Egypt and the Holy Land in 1862-4, where he was one of the few non-Muslims able to gain access to paint the interior of the Dome of the Rock. He published his book 'Jerusalem, Bethlehem and the Holy Places' in 1865.

Mosaic Found at Shellal, South Palestine on 23rd. April, 1917. The above is a reproduction of the floor or an Ancient Christian Church founded in the year 561 A.D. It was discovered by the Anzac Mounted Division after it having been greatly damaged by a Turkish Trench being dug through it. The design is allegorical and represents vine branches encircling various animals and birds. The inscription, which is broken, runs somewhat as follows:- "He provided diligently for the building of this Church here......He who was most saintly of us and the most beloved--God George. Founded in the year 622 after......(Gaza)." Roman Gaza dates from about the year 61 B.C., so that the date os the Church would be about 561 A.D.

An image of Ben Sira, the author of the deuterocanonical book Sirach. The evidence seems to show that his name was Yeshua, son of Shimon, son of Eleazar ben Sira. In the Greek text, the author is called 'Jesus the son of Sirach of Jerusalem.' 'Jesus' is the Anglicized form of the Greek name ??s???. The only fact known with certainty, drawn from the text itself, is that Ben Sira was a scholar, and a scribe thoroughly versed in the Law, and especially in the 'Books of Wisdom.' He may have authored the 'The Wisdom of Jesus son of Sirach' (or merely 'Sirach') in Alexandria, Egypt c.180–175 BC, where he is thought to have established a school. The book, originally written in Hebrew, is included in the Septuagint and is accepted as part of the biblical canon by Catholics and Eastern Orthodox, but not by most Protestants, and is listed in Article VI of the Thirty-Nine Articles of the Church of England. Although it was not accepted into the Tanakh, the Jewish biblical canon, The Sirach is occasionally quoted in the Talmud and works of rabbinic literature. From an encyclopedia or religious text published in Nuremberg in Germany, where the engraver worked.
