A gentleman playing billiards is interrupted by his irate wife with their children. By Hippolyte Bellangé (1800 - 1866), French painter and printmaker. Pupil of Gros, he exhibited at the Salon. In 1837 he moved to Rouen to become curator of the Musée des Beaux-Arts and returned to Paris in 1853.

'The chief point of interest about this caricature is the use of the leather-tipped cue, which must just have been invented, replacing the 'spoon', a row of which stands in a rack against the wall. 'Henry William Bunbury was a brother of Sir Charles Bunbury, the well-known sportsman, who won the first Derby in 1780 with Diomed and was again successful in 1801 and 1813' (Wilder).
