Joseph-Marie Amiot (1718-93), Jesuit priest and missionary in China, astronomer and historian. Amiot arrived in Macao in 1750 and the following year travelled to Peking (now Beijing) where he remained until his death. A prolific author on science and music, his translations from Chinese included the first translation into a European language of Sun Tzu's 'The Art of War'. Amiot was one of the last Jesuit missionaries in China, as the Chinese attitude towards the West hardened in the late 18th century. Engraved after a portrait made in China by the Italian artist and missionary Giuseppe Panzi.

The ambassadors stand in the foreground with an ambassador from the Mogol Emperor, the emperor's guards lining the wall and a display of twelve snow-white horses on their route to the emperor's presence. The original view appeared in the account of the VOC's embassy to China (1655-7) by Johan Nieuhoff. From an edition of Astley's 'A New General Collection of Voyages and Travels'.

A view of the famous forts in the Pearl River delta, built to guard the approaches to Canton. Later in the 1830s the first major battle of the First Opium War was the British attack on these forts. Part of a series "Voyage Autour du Monde par les Mers de l’Inde et de la Chine de la corvette de sa Majeste La Favorite execute pendant les annees 1830,1831,1832 sous le commandement de M. Laplace", published in Paris in 1835 under the direction of Louise Auguste de Sainson. Under the command of Laplace, La Favorite explored Indian Ocean and the route to the Indies via the Strait of Malacca, between Sumatra and Malaysia, into the China Sea (1830-1832).

The Bocca Tigris, a narrow strait in the Pearl River Delta, Guangdong, China, where the Pearl River discharges into the South China Sea. The strait is formed by the islands of Chuenpee and Anunghoy on the eastern side and Tycocktow on the western side. The city of Guangzhou (formerly Canton) is upstream. Showing vessels including a Chinese warship, identified by a key below the image. From the first French edition of "Collection de Cartes Geographiques, Vues, Marines, Plans et Portraits, relatifs aux Voyages du Capitaine J. Meares".

A watery landscape in East Asia; small boats on the lake or flooded plain to foreground, a mountain in the distance. From 'Narrative of a Journey in the Interior of China, and of a voyage to and from that country, in the years 1816 and 1817' by Clarke Abel (1780 - 1826). Abel was Naturalist to Lord Amherst's Embassy. The Alceste left Spithead on February 8, 1816 and first visited Madeira. From there she sailed to Table Bay, South Africa, then onwards to Java, from there to China, and then back to England via South Africa once more. On their return journey the ship was wrecked, but all passengers were rescued and they continued their voyage aboard the Termate.

European sailors on the rocky island of Pulo Leat (Pulau Liat) in the Gaspar Strait that separates Belitung and Bangka islands in Indonesia. It connects the Java Sea to the South China Sea. The men, some in rowing boats, observe what appears to be a ship in flames, sending up a cloud of smoke on the horizon. From 'Narrative of a Journey in the Interior of China, and of a voyage to and from that country, in the years 1816 and 1817' by Clarke Abel (1780 - 1826). Abel was Naturalist to Lord Amherst's Embassy. The Alceste left Spithead on February 8, 1816 and first visited Madeira. From there she sailed to Table Bay, South Africa, then onwards to Java, from there to China, and then back to England via South Africa once more. A Chinese temple inside an aquatic cave; a boat in foreground. From 'Narrative of a Journey in the Interior of China, and of a voyage to and from that country, in the years 1816 and 1817' by Clarke Abel (1780 - 1826). Abel was Naturalist to Lord Amherst's Embassy. The Alceste left Spithead on February 8, 1816 and first visited Madeira. From there she sailed to Table Bay, South Africa, then onwards to Java, from there to China, and then back to England via South Africa once more. On their return journey the ship was wrecked, but all passengers were rescued and they continued their voyage aboard the Termate.

Map of a journey made by the Macartney Embassy to China, the first British embassy to that country, 1792-94, published in Sir George Staunton's account of the mission. Macartney had gone to the summer palace at Jehol (Chengde) to meet the Qianlong emperor, with little success. He returned to Beijing overland, before travelling south to Hangzhou on the Yangtze River delta via the 1000-mile Imperial Canal.

Plain brown paper wrappers, pp.28, bound with string. 6 watercolours, largest c. 130 x 180 (5¼ x 7"); 20 engravings, five coloured aquatints. All plates trimmed; some watercolours loose, apparently one missing.
The watercolours are: four of Chinese junks, a Japanese junk and a Maltese rowboat, titled 'Passage Boat'. The engravings are views of China from Ogilby's edition of Nieuhof, 1669. Four of the aquatints are from Henry Ellis's Journal of the Proceedings of the late Embassy to China, 1817, the fifth from John Barrow's 'Voyage to Cochinchina, 1806.
