Westminster Hospital was founded in 1719, following a meeting in a coffee house, where four men met to discuss a 'charitable proposal for relieving the sick and needy and other distressed persons”. In 1834 a medical school attached to the hospital was formally founded. Westminster Hospital moved from Marsham Street to become Chelsea and Westminster Hospital at the old St Stephen's Hospital site in 1994. From the hand of and signed by John Ayrton Paris, M.D. (1785 - 1856). He had been elected a fellow of the College of Physicians 30 Sept. 1814, and from 1819 to 1826 lectured there on materia medica. He attained considerable practice as a physician, and was famous for his resource in treatment and skill in prescribing. In making out what was the matter, he trusted much to the patient's general appearance, asked only a few questions, and made no very minute physical examination. His prescriptions were remarkable for their efficiency, and for the minute care with which they were drawn up. His ‘Pharmacologia’ published in 1812, and revised by him up to the ninth edition in 1843, was a general treatise on materia medica and therapeutics. It was long the standard book on its subject, and he made five thousand guineas by its sale. He published in 1823 a book on ‘Medical Jurisprudence,’ which still continues to be the only English work on the subject with any pretensions to literary value. His portrait, by Skottowe, has been engraved by Bellin, and hangs in the dining-room of the College of Physicians of London. His bust, by Jackson, is at Falmouth, in the hall of the Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society. Paper watermarked 1807.

After attending the lectures of John Hunter, Baillie, and Cruikshank, and being the resident pupil of Mr. Henry Watson, surgeon to Westminster Hospital, he succeeded to the surgeoncy in 1793, and held the office till his death in 1840. Carlisle became a fellow of the Royal Society in 1800, and in 1804 delivered the Croonian lecture on ‘Muscular Motion,’ following it by another on the ‘Muscles of Fishes’ in 1805. He contributed other papers on biological subjects to the Philosophical and Linnean ‘Transactions,’ the ‘Philosophical Magazine,’ &c. Carlisle was long a member of the council of the College of Surgeons (from 1815) and an examiner (from April 1825), holding these appointments till death. He took great interest in Westminster Hospital, and was largely instrumental in raising funds for the new building. Carlisle was neither a brilliant anatomist nor physiologist, but was a fairly good surgeon. His introduction of the thin-bladed, straight-edged amputating knife, in place of the old clumsy crooked one, and his use of the simple carpenter's saw make his name chiefly worthy of note.

A wonderfully decorative certificate presented to Thomas Percy Pemberton on the occasion of his retirement as President of the Cambridge University Musical Society. It is signed by some of the members. CUMS is one of the oldest and most distinguished university music societies in the world. The Society has played a pivotal role in British musical life for 165 years. It has helped to launch the careers of such luminaries as Sir Andrew Davis, Sir John Eliot Gardiner and Mark Elder, has given world premières of works by Britten, Lutoslwski, Rutter, Holloway, Peter Maxwell Davies and Saxton, and has exposed successive generations of Cambridge musicians to visiting conductors and soloists including Tchaikovsky, Dvorak, Britten and Menuhin. The hand painted border, the vibrant colour unfaded, includes armorial crests, and the badge of the Society at top.

A licence issued in Pneil, Cape Town, permitting C. Howes to dig in the diamond mines in Dutoitspan (around which the city of Kimberly developed) from 27th September to 27th October 1872. The cost of a licence to dig, for a team of a maximum of 6 hands, for three months, was 5 shillings, this is shown as paid by the 'Cape of Good Hope Stamp Act 1864' revenue stamp on the licence. Diamonds were first found in the area between the Vaal and Orange Rivers in 1866. The area, under the control of Griqua leader Nickolaas Waterboer, was taken under British control and renamed West Griqualand on 27th October 1871 and all diamond mining was controlled by the Governor of the Cape Colony.

A very rare surviving licence for gold mining issued in Castlemaine district, Victoria, Australia. Numbered 'No. 38', and priced '£1'. In 1851 gold was discovered near Ballarat, and subsequently at Bendigo. Later discoveries occurred at many sites across Victoria. This triggered one of the largest gold rushes the world has ever seen. The colony grew rapidly in both population and economic power. In ten years the population of Victoria increased sevenfold from 76,000 to 540,000. All sorts of gold records were produced including the 'richest shallow alluvial goldfield in the world' and the largest gold nugget. Victoria produced in the decade 1851-1860 20 million ounces of gold, perhaps as much as one third of the world's output. Castlemaine was established during the gold rush. In September, 1851, three shepherds and a bullock driver discovered gold in Specimen Gully, about 5 km northeast of present-day Castlemaine. Within a month the alluvial bed of Forrest Creek was being worked with 8,000 miners on the field by the end of the year, and 25,000 by March 1852. The gold license system caused considerable unrest on the diggings. It was regarded as a tax and greatly resented since it was applied regardless of the success or failure of the digger. However, the gold commissioners and Police known as ‘traps’ enthusiastically policed the goldfields, checking on licenses and arresting and fining the unfortunate diggers who could not produce them. The Police ‘licence hunts’ were often brutal, corrupt, unfair and inefficient. These license hunts came to symbolise the government’s oppression of the diggers and directly led to major protests on goldfields in Sofala in 1852, Bendigo in 1853 and the Eureka Rebellion in 1854. A year after the Eureka Rebellion the gold license was replaced by a Miner’s Right like this one which cost one pound a year for the right to dig and also entitled the owner to vote in parliamentary elections.

A endowment policy for Sir Archibald John Primrose (1783-1868), MP, then 4th Earl of Rosebery from 1814, appointed to the Privy Council in 1831. It relates to his divorce from Harriett Bouverie on the grounds of her adultery with Sir Henry St. John Carew St. John-Mildmay. A high-profile court case ended with Primrose being awarded £15,000 damages from Mildmay (at a time when the norm was nearer £3,000). This agreement was to ensure the continued payment of the money owed. As it is unsigned and there is much deletion of the printed text this would be a draft of the final agreement. The Westminster Society for Insurance of Lives and Survivorships was established in 1792, the first proprietary life office. It was amalgamated with the Guardian Assurance Company in 1863.

The Royal Jennerian Society was established in 1803, following Edward Jenner’s (1749 - 1823) successful experiments in the 1790s, to give vaccinations on a wide scale. The President of the Society at this time was the Duke of Wellington (1769 - 1852). The diploma lists patrons of the society, including Everard Home, Matthew Baillie, William Babington, Astley Cooper and Benjamin Travers. On the left is a statue of Jenner holding a dead snake representing Jenner conquering smallpox. Through the arch is a view of the City of London. A highly decorative diploma by James George Oben (1779 - 1819). Red seal of the society glued over lower right corner.

A blank certificate from the famous parish of Gretna Green. Gretna Green was a popular destination for eloping couples because it was the first, easily reachable town across the Scottish border where marriage laws were much more relaxed in comparison to England and Wales. Couples just had to find two witnesses and did not need parental consent to marry. Scotland also permitted 'irregular marriages' which allowed almost anyone to conduct a marriage if two witnesses were present. Manuscript on a scrap below states 'Springfield Oct.r 11 1820 David Lang Parish of Gretna Green'. David Lang (1792-1827) was a famous 'Blacksmith Priest' who would conduct marriages in Gretna Green, he was nephew of Joseph Paisley who was the first of these priests. Lang was born in Lancashire and worked as a peddlar, he was captured by a press gang and forced to join the navy. While at sea his ship was captured by John Paul Jones and he joined his crew as a pirate but when the ship neared the Solway Coast he slipped overboard and swam to Gretna Green. His son Simon Lang also became a 'Blacksmith Priest' but was forced to other jobs with the decline in Gretna Green marriages after 1837.
