Ink mss. builder's invoice (ANS), made out to 'Towgood Esqre Arbourfield(?)' sheet 110 x 180mm. 4¼ x 7". Together with author's original pencil diagram to scale of the gate, to which he refers. On tissue sheet 140 x 350mm, 5½ x 13¾"(2). Plan severely browned and glue stained.
Provenance: from a scrap album compiled c.1840 - 1880 by Alfred Towgood of Riverside, a paper mill owner at St. Neots, Huntingdon. He was also a Lieutenant in the Duke of Manchester's Light Horse.

A billhead illustrated with an elevation of the 'Shawl Warehouse'. W.H. Lizars was Edinburgh's most famous engraver: he was employed to engrave the first of Audubon's 'Birds of America', including the Wild Turkey. However, because of a conflict of interest (his working on John Prideaux Selby's series of life-size birds), Audubon dropped him for Havell. However this billhead shows that even the best engravers had to engrave more than bookplates.

The premises occupied by Berry & Reid was on the corner of High Holborn and King Street, which in 1905 was developed into Kingsway, a large thoroughfare running south to the Strand and Aldwych. Holborn underground station is now in the approximate location of Berry & Reid.

Robert Dunthorne, born around 1850 was a successful print dealer and publisher in London. His Gallery "Rembrandt" in Vigo Street held exhibitions of the major artists of the times between 1880's-1930's. Some of these artists included Williams Strange, James McNeill Whistler, Axel Haig and W. L. Wyllie.

The hotel, one of three coaching inns in the town, was situated in the home in which the chemist and physician Thomas Beddoes (1760-1808) had been born. It was destroyed following a fire in 1911.
