He opposed the slave trade causing the enmity of the Yao and he worked among the people of the Manganja country until January 1862 when he went on a supplies trip. The boat they were travelling on sank and as their medical supplies were lost, Bishop Mackenzie's malaria could not be treated. Dr Livingstone erected a cross over his grave.

Drawn, Engraved & Published by Samuel Daniell, No 9 Cleveland Street, Fitzroy Square, London, Nov.r 15, 1805.
A very rare coloured aquatint. 380 x 505mm, 15 x 20", on thick paper.
Hand and shoulders portraits of four Africans, two bushmen and two Bechuana natives (now Botswana), published in Daniell's 'African Scenery and Animals', one of the scarcest plate books on South Africa. Daniell (1775-1811) arrived in South Africa in 1799 (soon after British occupation) and in 1801 joined an exploratory expedition to Bechuana, then at the limit of known territory. Daniell himself discovered the Kuruman Eye, a drinkable spring rising up into the Kalahari Desert, which has become one of South Africa's most celebrated natural wonders. He lived in Ceylon from 1806 until his death from tropical fever.

[Paris: Jules Renouard, 1832.]
Rare lithograph. Sheet 250 x 340mm (9¾ x 13½"), with publisher's blind stamp. Slight staining, bottom right corner snipped.
A Congolese chief outside his hut. A plate from 'Voyage au Congo et dans l'interieur de l'Afrique Equinoxiale', three volumes, by Jean Baptiste Douville (1794-1837). A wealthy traveller, Douville visited Luanda in 1828, before returning to Paris in 1831 and claiming to have explored the African interior. On the strength of his account he was awarded the Société de Géographie's third 'Grande Médaille d'Or des Explorations'. He published this account in 1832 but by the end of the year it was established that his involvement was fiction. After his fiancée killed herself because of the scandal, he left France for Brazil where he was murdered in 1837. Sir Richard Burton maintained that the details in the account were credible, but today it is believed that Douvill's chief sources were unpublished Portuguese manuscripts to which he had ready access.
