The Quakers Meeting.
The Quakers Meeting.
Hemskirk pinxt. J. Green fecit.
London, Printed for Robt. Sayer No.53 Fleet Street. [n.d., c.1770.]
Mezzotint, image 325 x 250mm,fine, 12¾ x 9¾". Trimmed to plate and glued to album page at corners.
Interior; a woman with a tall hat standing on a half barrel, her hands clasped, surrounded by other Quakers, male and female. After Egbert van Heemskerck I (1645 - 1704), who specialised in genre subjects in the Dutch taste, especially scenes set in taverns, courts and schools. To these he added a genre that he invented, the Quaker painting. In the second half of the seventeenth century Quakers has a dubious reputation as one of the extreme non-conformist sects. They were marked out by their clothes and their strange services, and were subject to civil penalties for refusing to take the oath of allegiance or pay tithes. Their modern respectability came much later. Of the many paintings that Heemskerk made of these outcasts, four were turned into prints, all with the same title, The Quaker's Meeting. A copy in reverse of a c.1685 print by Isaac Beckett.

The Rat Catcher.
C. Visches [Cornelis Visscher] Invt. On Stone by F. Sexton.
London, Printed & Published 1837 by A. Friedel, 252, Tottenham Court Road.
Lithograph. Printed area 310 x 210mm (12¼ x 8¼") with very large margins.
After Cornelis Visscher (1629-58). Adam Friedel (1780- death date unknown) was a Danish artist, printmaker and publisher who, after serving in the Napoleonic wars, voluntarily joined the Greek army at the start of the Greek War of Independence, fashioning himself as Danish nobility. He was exposed by a real noble who proved his backstory to be a lie. After spending a year in Egypt he took refuge in London in 1824 where he opened a lithographer's shop. Between 1825 and 1826 Friedel printed and published, both in Paris and London, twenty-four lithographs with portraits of politicians and prominent military figures of the Greek War of Independence. He had drawn the portraits himself, in most cases from nature, while J. Bouvier coloured and lithographed these images. The series was a success and he was awarded for his contributions to the Greek Struggle for Independence with two decorations. For health reasons he travelled around a lot. He travelled to Smyrna and taught at a Greek school. He stayed at the Ottoman Capital during the Crimean War and painted several portraits of various politicians. In 1865 he asked for a pension for his services to Greece however little is known about what happened to him after that and his place and date of death is unknown.

Engraving, platemark 300 x 220mm (11¾ x 8½"), with very large margins.

Engraving after 'A Woman Reading' (1723) by Jean-François de Troy, a painting which the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin recently acquired, thereby reuniting it with its pennant 'Young Woman Drinking Coffee'. Both works were acquired soon after they were painted by the collector and patron of Watteau Jean de Jullienne (1686 - 1766). De Troy (1679-1752) was a leading painter of the Parisian élite, and while primarily a history painter he worked in most genres. De Troy made decorative paintings for the châteaux of Versailles and Fontainebleau, and designed a series of tapestries for the Gobelins factory.

Rich.d Redgrave. Etch Club [1844]
Etching on india, very large margins; platemark 185 x 135mm (7¼ x 5¼"). Proof before additional text added. Crease upper left margin.
One of few etchings by painter and arts administrator Richard Redgrave (1804-88), in which an angel looks over an unwell child (in the final state it was accompanied by verse by Redgrave). In 1837 Redgrave was a founding member of the Etching Club, under whose auspices this print was published in 1844. Kathryn Moore Heleniak (DNB) writes that: 'it was in the 1840s that Redgrave produced his most memorable paintings, 'lessons of philanthropic appeal on behalf of the oppressed and miserable', and this print, like many of his works in this period, draws attention to the perils and trials facing humanity. In later years Redgrave painted less and became an influential arts educator and administrator, working with museums, international exhibitions, writing books and becoming surveyor of the queen's pictures.

[Rural Idyll]

Etching, platemark 190 x 240mm (7½ x 9½"). Large margins.
Fascinating and rare pastoral scene showing a dozen figures (and a dog) playing on swings, singing, and taking part in other activities. The scene echoes the landscapes of Gaspar Poussin and the fêtes champêtres painted by Watteau and his contemporaries. The classical vase on a plinth on the right, for instance, is an explicit act of homage to painters of Italian landscape. The bizarre mask in the lower right corner, however, suggests something more than straightforward pastiche.

[The Smoker.]
[The Smoker.]
[after Adriaen van Ostade.]
[London: Friedel's Lithographic Establishment, c.1838.]
Lithograph, proof before letters. Printed area 220 x 185mm (8¾ x 7¼"), with large margins.
A Dutchman in rustic dress, sitting in a window, glancing over his shoulder while holding a pipe and tankard, after Adriaen van Ostade (1610-85).
