Déliverance de la Corse, le 29 Vendémaire An 5.
Dessiné par Carle Vernet. Terminé par Niquet et Pillement.
[n.d., c.1806.]
Engraving with handcolour. Plate: 390 x 295mm (15¼ x 11½"). Spotting in sky.
A military scene showing the reconquering of Corsica by the French on 19th October 1796. Following the execution of Louis XVI Pasquale Paoli, leader of Corsica, requested protection from Britain. Seeing the chance to have a naval base in the Mediterranean, a British naval fleet, under the command of Admiral Samuel Hood, set sail in 1794. However, with Spain joining the French in 1795, Britain started to reduce the number of soldiers on the island and by October all troops had been removed leaving the island unguarded and open to French attack. From Carle Vernet's 'Tableaux Historiques des Campagnes D'Italie...' 1806.

Engraving, platemark 380 x 465mm (15 x 18¼"). Slight crease;
The Complesso Conventuale di San Cosimato in Vicovaro, near Rome. The ancient convent was completely rebuilt between 1727 and 1735, and part of the new convent can be seen in the top left, although the view is dominated by the Claudian aqueduct and modern bridge crossing the river Aniene. From a series of Italian views after Philipp Hackert (1737 - 1807). Born in Prenzlau north of Berlin, Hackert came to Italy in 1768, settling in Rome where he joined a German group of artists also including Anton Raphael Mengs and the art historian Johann Joachim Winckelmann. In 1786 he settled in Naples as court painter to Ferdinand IV. The British painter Joseph Wright painted almost the exact same view a few years after Hackert (the painting is in the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool).
