A dog arrives at the door of a an Alpine hospice, an exhausted child, rescued from an avalanche by the animal, clinging to its back. The story is recounted in two lines of text below the title.
The 'Hospice du mont Saint-Bernard', a traveller's hospice on the often treacherous St. Bernard Pass in the Western Alps between Switzerland and Italy, is the origin of the name of the St. Bernard breed of dog, a working dog from the Swiss Alps, originally bred for rescue.
