[Spilt Milk]
[Spilt Milk]
In Plate B. Riviere 1868.
Proof Etching 260 x 265mm.
Briton Riviere (1840 - 1920) was an English painter; the surname indicates his descent from a Huguenot family which settled in England in the 17th Century. The family included several painters, and so Briton Riviere was introduced to art at a young age. He studied drawing and painting at Oxford, where, incidentally, his father William Riviere had persuaded the University to introduce the study of art for undergraduates. Though he exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1858, Riviere's first real success came only in 1869, with his picture The Long Sleep, showing an old man dead in his chair, watched by his two dogs.

The character of the animal and its lugubrious expression is expertly captured. Sir Edwin Landseer (1802 - 1873) was the most famous animal painter of the period. He was trained by his father to sketch animals from life, and began exhibiting at the Royal Academy when only 13. Emotive portraits of animals went down very well with the Victorian public, crossing the class divide. Queen Victoria had Landseer paint her pets, while the middle classes bought prints of his work to hang at home.
