Mezzotint on Indian laid paper, proof before title and artists names, signed by the artist & engraver. 450 x 605mm Uncut. Mint.

Goodall (1822-1904) was taught by his artist father, Edward, and first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1838. After painting landscapes and rural scenes early in his career, a trip to Egypt in 1858-9 led to a change in direction. Thereafter Goodall painted mainly scenes from Egyptian life with Biblical associations. Goodall was elected RA in 1864 and enjoyed great popularity during this time, but his fortunes later declined greatly and in 1902 he was declared bankrupt.

[Fishermen.]
[Fishermen.] From the Original Drawing in the Collection of the Duke of Devonshire. No.68.
Claude le Lorrain delin.t R. Earlom fecit.
Published Nov.r 1.st 1774 by John Boydell Engraver in Cheapside.
Mezzotint with etching line, printed in brown ink, with very large margins. Plate 210 x 260mm (8¼ x 10¼").
Three figures in a boat; one rowing and the other two assisting a third figure in the water with a net fishing; bridge behind with figures and animals crossing. Engraved by Richard Earlom (1743 - 1822) after a sketch in the copy of Claude le Lorrain's 'Liber Veritatis' owned by the Duke of Devonshire at Chatsworth. Claude (c.1600-82) was a prolific and successful landscape painter, and, even during his lifetime, forgeries of his work appeared for sale. To combat this Claude made up six albums of tinted sketches of his completed works, each sketch with the name of the purchaser of the painting on the back. The 'Liber Veritatis' (Book of Truth) was then distributed around Europe so that his genuine paintings could be authenticated. The Chatsworth copy of the 'Liber Veritatis' contained 200 drawings, including a frontispiece portrait of Claude and five unrelated drawings. Commissioned by John Boydell, Richard Earlom engraved the full set between 1774 and 1777, when they were published by Boydell in two volumes, each containing 100 prints, numbered 1-200. A third volume of 100 prints was published by Boydell in 1819, which was numbered separately, containing mezzotints by Earlom after other drawings by Claude in various collections.

Frontispiece to the Royal Magazine.
Frontispiece to the Royal Magazine.
O. Neal delin. I. Fougeron Sculp.
[n.d. c.1761.]
Engraving. Plate 184 x 109mm (7¼ x 4¼").
The scene is filled with symbols of the arts and sciences. Counterclockwise from the lower left, these are: barrel and bale for commerce, Euclidean figures and set-squares for geometry, Vauban-style fortress for military sciences, cherubs measuring the globe with a compass for geography, brushes and palette for the fine arts, and mask and sword for drama. Behind the historian, the study of antiquity is indicated by two men reading an inscription on a pyramid near a toppled column. This elaborate allegory illustrates the purpose of the periodical. Mercury, messenger of the gods, informs the historian about world events, here shown by the god interrupting the gentleman writing at his desk to bring to his notice the storm off the coast. The winged goddess Fame waits above, holding her herald's trumpet and scroll of great deeds, ready to spread the news which the writer will record for posterity.
