Portrait of Blaise Pascal (1623 - 1662), French mathematician, physicist, inventor, writer and Catholic philosopher. In honour of his scientific contributions, the name Pascal has been given to the SI unit of pressure and to Pascal's law (an important principle of hydrostatics); Pascal's triangle and Pascal's wager are also named for him. From Alexandre Savérien's 'Histoire des Philosophes modernes', published in eight 4to volumes from 1760-1767. 79 plates (and eight frontispieces) were engraved for the book. The plates engraved for vols 3-8 are adaptated to an in-12mo format, with the addition of a crayon manner border engraved by Jean Charles François (1717 - 1769), inventor of the technique in 1757.

Thomas Pellett (c.1671-1744), physician. A resident of Covent Garden (he was buried in the churchyard of St Paul's, Covent Garden), Pellett was a fellow of the Royal Society and Royal College of Physicians. This engraving is done from a 1737 portrait by Swedish painter Michael Dahl in the Royal College of Physicians. The engraving shows various changes from the oil painting, most notably on the right where a classical bust has been inserted. Pellett was also painted by Hogarth.

Robert Poole (1707/8-52), physician and theological writer. As a physician's pupil at St Thomas's Hospital he published (under a pseudonym) a meticulous description of the hospital, 'A Physical Vade Mecum [...]' (1741). He later travelled widely, studying in France and visiting Gibraltar and the West Indies. This portrait was included in his 'Journal from London to France and Holland, or, the Traveller's Useful Vade Mecum'. Only likeness.

Portrait of Pierre de la Ramée (Peter Ramus, 1515 – 1572), French humanist, logician, and educational reformer; in profile to the right, his left hand placed on a book. A Protestant, he fled from Paris in 1561 and returned only to be murdered in the St. Bartholomew's Day massacre, which saw Roman Catholic violence directed against the Huguenots (French Calvinist Protestants) during the French Wars of Religion. A portrait, seated, in profile to the right, of John Rutter, one of the founders of the Liverpool Medical Institution. Liverpool Medical Institution is one of the oldest medical societies in the world, tracing its origins to the founding of the Liverpool Medical Library in 1779. For 50 years the Liverpool Medical Library was situated variously at the Liverpool Infirmary on Shaw's Brow, and the Liverpool Dispensary in Church Street. In the 1830s a campaign masterminded by Dr John Rutter, led to the raising of sufficient funds to erect the present building, which was opened in May 1837.

Johann Jakob Scheuchzer (1672-1733) the Swiss scholar. He took his degree of doctor in medicine at the University of Utrecht and then went to Altdorf to complete his mathematical studies. He then returned to his home town of Zurich and was made junior town physician with the promise of professorship of mathematics. In 1733 he was promoted to the chair of physics with the office of senior town physician.

Adrien von Seumenicht (1588-1638), alchemist best known for his work 'Aureum Saeculum Redivivum' (The Golden Age Restored). In an oval frame surrounded by alchemical and mathematical instruments, two of which supported by angels, with six lines of Latin text by Jonas Angelus in cartouche below. Probably a frontispiece to a volume of his works.

The project was unsuccessful due largely to poor financing. He was editor of the American Telegraphic Magazine, and also wrote ‘The Telegraph Manual’ (1859).
