James Harris (1709-80), F.R.S., Member of Parliament for Christchurch from 1761 until his death, and was Comptroller to the Queen from 1774 to 1780. As well as being a philosopher and musical patron he wrote 'Three Treatises: on art; on music, painting and poetry' in 1744 and, most famously, 'Hermes, a philosophical inquiry concerning universal grammar' in 1751. His son was James Harris, first earl of Malmesbury. This portrait was published as a frontispiece to Harris's ''Philosophical Inquiries', 1781. De Vesme believed this print may be after George Romney, although the sitter is not listed in Horne; however it resembles the oil attibuted to Frances Reynolds, c.1777, given to the National (Portrait) Gallery by the 3rd Earl of Malmesbury in 1865.

Neoclassical representation of the Muse Clio with accompanying putti, after Giovanni Battista Cipriani (Florence 1727- London 1785). A founder member of the Royal Academy and one of the most prolific draughtsmen of his generation,Cipriani produced decorative schemes, drawings for medallions, and concert tickets in a neo-classical style. His fame was partly due to his partnership with his fellow Italian, engraver Francesco Bartolozzi. Bartolozzi engraved many of Cipriani's works and also designed Cipriani's tomb in the Old Chelsea Burial Ground.

A portrait of Henry Howard (c.1617-1747), oldest son of the 3rd Duke of Norfolk, and his wife Frances (c.1516-77). The identification as his father was added later. Henry, one of the first English poets to write in the sonnet form that Shakespeare later used, was beheaded for treason by an ill and paranoid Henry.

Two scenes of children playing: in 'Hunt the Slipper' a group of children sit in a circle playing, as one boy searches for the hidden slipper; in 'Hot Cockles' one person places their head in anothers lap and guesses who is hitting them from behind, a variation of the classic 'Blind Man’s Buff'.

James Woodmason traded as a stationer and publisher on Leadenhall Street in the City of London in the late 18th century; he lost his seven children in a fire in 1782.

Clorinda seated on ground, leaning against a tree, head in profile to left; to left, Tancred in profile to right, down on his right knee, holding Clorinda's right hand with his right; in a landscape. Two characters from Tasso's 'Jerusalem Delivered'. Torquato Tasso (1544 - 1595) was an Italian poet. He was author of 'Aminta', 'Rinaldo and Armida' published in 1562, and 'Gerusalemme Liberata', finished in 1575. It concerns the First Crusade to the Holy Land (1096-9) and the Crusaders siege of Jerusalem under the leadership of Godfrey of Boulogne. His models for this heroic epic were Homer and Virgil's Aeneid. Tasso portrayed both imaginary characters and real historical persons, among them the heroes Rinaldo and Tancredi, and their Saracen ladies Armida and Clorinda.
