[James Ramsay] Illustris et Generosus Dominus Dominus Jacobus Ramsay, Scotus, Eques Auratus, Gen Mai. Anno Ætat MDCXXVI.
Johann: Cressius fec: Sebast: Furck ad vivum sculpit.
Engraving, very scarce; sheet 195 x 160mm (7¾ x 6¼"). Collector's stamp of Edward Wenman Martin on verso. Thread margins, wear at top of image, signs of damage to the printing plate.
Portrait of James Ramsay (known as 'Black Ramsay', 1589?-1638/9), army officer in the Swedish service, engraved by Sebastian Furck after Johannes Nicolas Cressius in 1636, two years before Ramsay's death. Ramsay became the colonel of his own recruited regiment of Scots serving in Swedish campaigns during the Thirty Years' War, with the Swedish chancellor Axel Oxenstierna authorizing the provision of new troops from Lithuania, Scotland and Courland (now part of Latvia) to replace the many troops in the regiment who had died. Ramsay's regiment were part of an estimated 30,000 Scottish soldiers in Swedish service during the war. Ramsay's conduct in forcing the fortified castle at Würzburg to surrender saw him receiving a large land grant in Mecklenburgh, and an appointment as governor of Hanau, near Frankfurt. However Hanau was attacked and taken in 1638: Ramsay, wounded, died in prison soon after. The collection of Edward Wenman Martin warranted a special mention by Chaloner Smith when it came up at auction (Sotheby's 1854-5): apparently Martin ''had obtained an extraordinary number of the very great rarities amongst the English portraits, but unfortunately, did not preserve all his prints with proper care; indeed, he is said to have permitted a favourite monkey to handle them, so that prices, even for those uninjured in what the catalogue calls their ''unadorned state'' were not very high''.

Scenes from the Dutch raid on the river Medway in Kent which ended the second Anglo-Dutch war (1665-7). The Dutch, led by Michiel de Ruyter, captured the fort at Sheerness (below) and proceeded to break the chain of English defences Etching by Romeyn de Hooghe (1645-1708), exponent of the late Dutch Baroque best known for his political caricatures of Louis XIV and his prints glorifying William III and the Glorious Revolution. De Hooghe's output as an artist was broad, however, and he had other talents and responsibilities: in 1689 he was placed in charge of obtaining building materials for the royal hunting lodge of Het Loo; the same year he became a Doctor of Law at Harderwijk University; he designed ceiling paintings for municipal buildings and church windows; and he wrote several political and historical treatises. De Hooghe based the etching on works by Willem Schellinks (1623-78), who painted several versions of the Medway raid.

[Jacob Gole, c.1695]
Mezzotint, fine, proof before all letters; platemark 290 x 205mm (11½ x 8"). Thread margins; glued to backing sheet on left edge.
Edward Russell, earl of Orford (1652-1727), naval officer. In 1671, Russell was made lieutenant at the age of eighteen. He was promoted to captain in the following year. In the third Anglo-Dutch War he saw active service in the North Sea, before serving in the Mediterranean with Sir John Narborough and Arthur Herbert from 1676 to 1682. He served on the Tangier station in 1680 (it was then a British possession) and acquired a substantial fortune through illicit trading. This fortune was believed by Pepys to have been the reason why Russell resigned his command in 1683 after the discovery of the Rye House Plot. In 1688, Russell was one of the Immortal Seven, a group of English noblemen who issued the invitation to William of Orange to depose King James II. In the subsequent War of the Grand Alliance, Russell served at sea, commanding a fleet after 1690. In 1692, Russell was Commander-in-Chief of the Anglo-Dutch force that fought the French fleet at Barfleur, and destroyed much of it at La Hogue, his victory there being the decisive naval battle of the war. Russell became first Lord of the Admiralty in 1694, remaining in that post until 1699. He was created Baron Shingey, Viscount Barfleur, and Earl of Orford in 1697.

[Anon., c.1685]
Rare mezzotint, sheet 260 x 180mm (10¼ x 7"). Trimmed; tipped into album sheet.
Sir Edward Spragge (c.1629-73), naval officer. In his early career Spragge is said to have spent time as a slave in Algiers, and after marrying the daughter of the governor of Dunkirk he commanded a French privateer, which was badly damaged by an English frigate. He then joined the navy and was knighted for his gallantry in the battle of Lowestoft in the Second Anglo-Dutch War. He was made a scapegoat for the 'division of the fleet' which precipitated the Four Days' Battle during the same conflict, but was exonerated following a parliamentary enquiry. Sprague subsequently served as ambassador to the Spanish Netherlands, and as admiral of a fleet fighting the Algerian corsairs (he won a spectacular victory over the Algerian fleet at Bugia Bay in 1671, which led to the signing of a peace treaty). In the Third Anglo-Dutch War he was made admiral of the blue after distinguishing himself in the battle of Sole Bay, but was drowned in the battle of Texel following a private battle with Cornelis Tromp. He was buried at Westminster Abbey.

De Largilliere Pinxit. Edelinck Sculpsit Cum Pr. Regis 1692.
Engraving, sheet 430 x 315mm (17¼ x 12¾"). Trimmed within plate; repaired vertical fold; hardly visible from front.
James Francis Edward Stuart, the 'Old Pretender' (1688-1766), Jacobite claimant to the thrones of England, Scotland and Ireland, in the feminine dress style of the period, wearing a feathered hat and Garter. As the son of James II, his birth raised the prospect of a catholic succession and so sparked the 'Glorious Revolution' that forced his father into exile. James was raised in the court of his exiled father at Saint Germain-en-Laye in France (hence the French artist and printmaker responsible for this print). As James III of England and Ireland and James VIII of Scotland, he claimed the English, Scottish and Irish thrones from the death of his father in 1701, when he was proclaimed king of England, Scotland and Ireland by his cousin Louis XIV of France. Following his death in 1766 he was succeeded by his son Charles Edward Stuart in the Jacobite Succession. Engraved by French printmaker Gérard Edelinck (1640-1707), a specialist in portraits who reproduced many works by artists such as Hyacinthe Rigaud and Nicolas de Largillière, and is considered one of the greatest engravers of the 17th century. This portrait was by Largillière, who worked in London before returning to Paris to flee anti-Catholic persecution in England. He also painted James II and his wife Mary of Modena.

Karl XII (1682-1718), king of Sweden from 1697 until his death. Karl first demonstrated his exceptional skills as a military leader when winning several victories in the Great Northern War (1700-21) which was begun when a triple alliance of Denmark-Norway, Saxony-Poland-Lithuania and Russia launched an attack on the Swedish protectorate, significantly outnumbering the forces of the inexperienced Swedish king. A major victory over a Russian army some three times the size at the battle of Narva in 1700 led Peter the Great to sue for peace, which Karl rejected. Count Imre Thököly de Késmárk (1658-1705), Hungarian nobleman who led an anti-Habsburg uprising, following his father Istvan (who died when he was a child) in doing so. He led an army of rebels, reinforced by Turkish and Transylvanian forces, and established himself as Prince of Upper Hungary (1682-5). Having formed an alliance with the Ottoman Empire, Thököly assisted the Turks in the Battle of Vienna in 1683, in which intervention from the Polish army of Sobieski led to a decisive defeat for the Ottoman army. Thököly then tried to reconcile himself with Habsburg Emperor Leopold I, offering to lay down his arms in exchange for recognition of Thököly as Prince of Upper Hungary and confirmation of Protestant religious rights in Hungary. Leopold, however, demanded complete surrender, and Thököly renewed hostilities. This 1685 campaign was also a failure and ended in imprisonment. Although Thököly achieved subsequent victories with diminished forces, he lost his principality of Upper Hungary and finally retired to Galata, near Istanbul, with large estates granted him by Sultan Mustafa II.

Engraving, sheet 490 x 340mm (19¼ x 13¼"). Trimmed inside platemark; fold through centre. Small tear on right edge.
Abraham van der Hulst (1619 - 1666), Dutch admiral. Van der Hulst captained the 'Groningen' ship during the First Anglo-Dutch War (1652-4) and subsequently blockaded Portugal in the later stages of the Dutch-Portuguese war (1601-61). He then returned to action against the English in the Second Anglo-Dutch War (1665-7). He fought in the Battle of Lowestoft, a heavy defeat for the Dutch in which van der Hulst's conduct saw him promoted to admiral. He was second-in-command to Cornelis Tromp in the 'Four Days Battle' (11 June to 14 June) off the Isle of Thanet, which remains one of the longest naval engagements in history. Van der Hulst commanded the ship the 'Spiegel' and was shot in the chest by a bullet and died on June 12th. This print commemorates his participation in the battle, which can be seen taking place in the background. Van der Hulst was buried in the Oude Kerk in Amsterdam, where a marble tomb by Artus de With was erected in his memory.

A scene showing the election of William, Prince of Orange (1650-1702) (later William III of England), to the role of Stadtholder in the Netherlands. Following the first Anglo-Dutch war Cromwell had demanded that the position of Stadtholder remain vacant, however, with the Restoration of the Monarchy in 1660 this demand was deemed void. Following what was called the 'disaster year' in 1672 in which the Dutch went to war with both the French and the English it was decided to elect William of Orange to the post. The scene shows William standing behind a table surrounded by his ministers of state, behind them musicians play and figures sit around a large dining table.

Etching, text title on verso; sheet 450 x 580mm (17¾ x 22¾"). Trimmed, losing text and vignette plans of both chambers below image; false margin added in its place; vertical folds.
William III (1650-1702) seated on throne at right, presiding over the House of Commons. Above two figures representing Plenty (with a cornucopia) and War (with a shield) hold a scroll; inset session of Lords above. First state of a print subsequently reworked to fit the arrival of successive monarchs up to and including George II in 1727. Etched by Romeyn de Hooghe (1645-1708), exponent of the late Dutch Baroque best known for his political caricatures of Louis XIV and his prints glorifying William III and the Glorious Revolution.
