Mary Squires the Gypsy, who was Condemned for Stripping Eliza. Canning, at Endfield Wash; and has since obtain'd his Majesty's most Gracious Pardon.
Drawn from the Life, by the Honourable R_d E_d and Etch'd by Tho.s Worlidge, Painter in the Little Piazza, Covent Garden.
[Etched c.1754, but on wove paper watermarked 1812.]
Etching. 205 x 160mm (8 x 6½") very large margins.
An 18-year-old London maidservant called Elizabeth Canning claimed to have been kidnapped on New Year's Day and held for a month, in a brothel in Enfield. She accused `Mother Wells', the madam of the establishment, of trying to force her to become a prostitute. A hideous gypsy crone staying in the house, Mary Squires, cut off the girl's stays (worth 10 shillings), and Elizabeth was imprisoned in an attic with only a few crusts of bread and a jug of water to live on. On January 29th she escaped through a window and walked all the way back to her mother's house in the City. Squires and Wells were apprehended, and tried at the Old Bailey; the former was condemned to be hanged, and the latter was burned in the hand and imprisoned. However opinion turned against Canning and new evidence led her to be charged with perjury and transported for seven years.

[Philip Stanhope, Earl of Chesterfield]
[by Thomas Worlidge after Peter Lely]
Etching, platemark 80 x 55mm (3¼ x 2¼"). Thread margins; tipped into album sheet. Proof before letters.
Portrait of Philip Stanhope, second earl of Chesterfield (1633–1714), courtier and politician, etched by Thomas Worlidge (1700-66) after the portrait by Peter Lely (Melbourne Hall, Derbyshire). Under the Protectorate Chesterfield was involved in royalist plots but 'perceived as too far engaged with his mistresses to be a major influence' (DNB). After the Restoration he was made lord chamberlain to Catherine of Braganza, and later chief justice. Chesterfield was against declaring William and Mary king and queen after 1688, and subsequently refused all offers of employment from William although he remained active in local politics. One of only two engraved likenesses recorded by O'Donoghue. The printmaker Thomas Worlidge also etched his second wife Elizabeth.

[Admiral Richard Tyrell]
TW [Thomas Worlidge, c.1758]
Etching, platemark 100 x 80mm (4 x 3¼"). Thread margins; glued to backing sheet; fine impression on white laid paper.
Admiral Richard Tyrell (1716-66). According to O'Donoghue this print was issued with an account of his exploits when commanding the 'Buckingham' on a separate plate. The text recorded in Dack's Worlidge is probably copied from that account: '[Tyrell], in the ship of War of 64 Guns, 472 men, gave chase to a Fleet of Ships carrying Provisions from St. Eustatia to Martinico. The Merchant Ships made the best of their way with one of the Frigates, whilst the Florissaux of 74 Guns, 700 men, with two Frigates carrying 60 Guns and 600 men lay to in the line of Battle ahead. The Buckingham alone bore down upon the Three, attached and (after an obstinate engagement) defeated them on the 3rd of November, 1758. Captain Tyrell afterwards became an Admiral.' Etching by Thomas Worlidge (1700-66), known as 'the English Rembrandt'. Worlidge was a pupil of Alessandro Maria Grimaldi, whose daughter Arabella he married.

[n.d., c.1740-66]
Etching with small margins, 200 x 160mm (8 x 6¼"). Trimmed to plate; glued to backing sheet at corners.
Posthumous impression of Worlidge's self-portrait, with the number '33' added in the top right to correspond with the numbering of the catalogue of prints which Worlidge's widow produced. Like many of Worlidge's plates this remained 'unfinished'. In later publications Worlidge's name was inscribed along the bottom of the print. The 'English Rembrandt', Worlidge (1700-66) was a pupil of Alessandro Maria Grimaldi, whose daughter Arabella he married.
O'D 4; W33; D231. BM website (incorrectly) describes this as second state, but do not take into account impressions without any numbers in the top right. See 32573. Ex: Collection of the Late Honour

[Portrait of a young man, so-called portrait of Rembrandt.]
[Thomas Worlidge.]
[n.d., c.1770.]
Etching, unlettered state on laid paper, sheet 210 x 160mm. 8¼ x 6¼". Trimmed within plate.
Bust portrait turned to right to face the viewer, a heavy round collar and chain around his neck, thick dark hair. By Thomas Worlidge Senior (1700 - 1766), probably a later state, with evidence of re-working to the sitter's face. After a painting in a private collection, probably an eighteenth century copy of a painting formerly attributed Rembrandt (1606 - 1669). Collector's stamp to verso.
