[Untitled folio of eleven lithographic sketches of French architecture, each signed K.H. Digby.]
[n.d., one plate watermarked W.Spear 1815.]
Oblong folio, 11 lithographs stitched in blue wrappers. Wear to wrappers and edges.
A record of a tour around France, with sketches of Amiens, Rouen, Montpelier & Nimes, particularly noting the Roman antiquities, hear illustrated with early lithographs. The windows of opportunity for an English artist were few during this period, probably either during the Peace of Amiens, 1802, or immediately after the fall of Napoleon in 1814. A scarce work, not in Abbey: the only reference we can find is 'Lumley's Bibliographical Advertiser' of 1845, recording for sale at Lumley's Bookshop 'XI Rough Lithographic Sketches, by K.H. Digby, of French Architectural Antiquities, 5s'.

Two portraits of Bernard-Raymond Fabré-Palaprat, one in the uniform of Grand Master of the Knights Templar, the other as Patriarch of the Johannite Church of Primitive Christians. Fabré-Palaprat (1773-1838), a Catholic priest turned chiropodist (because of the Revolution), who founded a revival of the Knights Templar called l'Orde du Temple and the Johannite Church in 1805. He claimed that it had been a secret continuation of the original Order which had gone underground upon its disolution in the 14th century. With the approval of Napoleon Boneparte the order spread quickly through the French empire, but internal divisions caused it to collapse after Fabré-Palaprat's death. However his church still exists as the Apostolic Johannite Church.

[n.d., c.1730.]
Engraving. Sheet 120 x 80mm (4¾ x 3¼"). Trimmed to printed border.
A portrait of Claude de Forbin-Gardanne (1656-1733) while in the service of the king of Siam, when he was grand admiral, general of all the king's armies and governor of Bangkok. Although the story sounds like a novel inspired by 'Baron Munchausen', Forbin did indeed hold these titles: he stayed on for two years after the first French embassy to Siam, 1685. This portrait was a frontispiece to his memoirs. That was not the only remarkable event in his life. He had been a musketeer but had been sentenced to death after a duel; reprieved he joined the Navy under his brother's identity. After his return from Siam he fought in the Nine Years' War, escaping from custody in Plymouth (1689) to fight at the Battle of Beachy Head (1690), Barfleur (1692) where he was wounded, the Battle of Lagos (1693), and the Siege of Barcelona (1697). During the War of the Spanish Succession his successes included fighting in the Battle of the Lizard (1707) in which the French destroyed an English convoy, capturing 60 merchantman and four ships of the line out of 80 ships. His final claim-to-fame was transporting Prince James Francis Edward Stuart, the 'Old Pretender', to Scotland for his ill-fated attempt to regain the throne, only to be thwarted by Admiral Sir George Byng's fleet.

[Francis, Duke of Guise]
[Francis, Duke of Guise] Franciscus a Lotharin gia Dux Guisius
[1660]
Engraving with accompanying letterpress sheet, 17th century watermark; each 470 x 350mm (18½ x 13¾") Tear to engraving lower right. Small margins on left repaired. Good repair in centre.
Francis, Duke of Guise (1519-63), French soldier and politician. Husband of Anna d'Este and uncle of Mary, Queen of Scots, his military triumphs included defending Metz against Emperor Charles V in 1552 and capturing Calais from England in 1558. In religion Guise was strongly Catholic, which served him well during the reign of Francis II but after the king's death, the favour that regent Catherine de' Medici showed towards Protestants led Guise to become part of the 'triumvirate' defending the Catholic cause. The disputes between Protestants and Catholics eventually led not just to Guise's assassination by a Huguenot, but the French Wars of Religion (1562-98). From 'Les Portraits des Hommes Illustres Francois qui sont Peints dans la Galerie du Palais Cardinal de Richelieu' (1660). The book reproduces the portraits of great men hanging in Richelieu's 'Galerie des hommes illustres' by Simon Vouet and Philippe de Champaigne (although only four of the original paintings survive). The final 'illustrious figure' was Richelieu himself.
