Francis Russell, fifth duke of Bedford (1765-1802), agriculturalist and politician. Bedford became known as a leading promoter of agricultural development. He was an original member of the board of agriculture set up in 1793, and the first president of the Smithfield Club in 1798, while he also instituted the annual agricultural fair at Woburn. Russell was also an ambitious urban developer, and used his 119 acres of land around London's West End to develop much of the Bloomsbury estate (including Bedford Square, Russell Square, and Bloomsbury Square). After Russell's death a statue was erected in Russell Square, showing Russell with one hand resting on a plough and the other holding ears of corn. Stipple after one of the three busts of Russell sculpted by Joseph Nollekens (1737-1823), whose many portrait busts make up a visual record of the personalities of late Georgian Britain.

William Smith (1808-1876) was a print-seller and antiquary. He started at Cambridge University but following his father's death, he and his brother succeeded to the business and he was obliged to abandon his studies. A year later in 1836 he purchased the collection of engravings formed by John Sheepshanks which were considered to be the most perfect in Europe, which he later sold to the British Museum. Among the collections which reached the Museum through his exertions were those of ‘Mr. Harding of Finchley’ in 1841, of Coningham in 1844 and 1845, selections from the Aylesford and Woodburn collections in 1847, and some etchings of the utmost rarity by Rembrandt, procured at Baron Verstolk's sale at Amsterdam in 1847. He took a prominent part in establishing the National Portrait Gallery, being appointed an original trustee, and chosen deputy chairman in 1858. He was also actively engaged in the management of the Art Union of London. He was elected a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1852. His collections, which included many rare catalogues of galleries and exhibitions, with copious manuscript notes, he bequeathed to the library of the South Kensington Museum.

Thomas Tayler [1746 - 1796], Master of Lloyd's Coffee House. The coffee house that Edward Lloyd opened in 1687 near the Thames on Tower Street was a favourite haunt of men from the ships that moored at London's docks. The house was 'spacious, well built and inhabited by able tradesmen' according to a contemporary publication. It grew so popular that in 1691 Lloyd moved it to much larger and more luxurious quarters on Lombard Street. Nat Ward, a publican whom Alexander Pope accused of trading vile rhymes for tobacco, reported that the tables in the new house were 'very neat and shined with rubbing.' A staff of five served tea and sherbet as well as coffee. Lloyd's coffee house served from the start as the headquarters for marine underwriters, in large part because of its excellent mercantile and shipping connections. In 1771 seventy-nine of the underwriters who did business at Lloyd's subscribed £100 each and joined together in the Society of Lloyd's, an unincorporated group of individual entrepreneurs operating under a self-regulated code of behavior. These were the original Members of Lloyd's; later, members came to be known as 'Names.' The Names committed all their worldly possessions and all their financial capital to secure their promise to make good on their customers' losses. That commitment was one of the principal reasons for the rapid growth of business underwritten at Lloyd's over the years. In 1774 the 'Subscribers to Lloyd's' occupied new premises at the Royal Exchange at Cornhill. By the turn of the century the traditional club of marine underwriters had become an international market for insurance risks of almost every type. Lloyd's pre-eminence as a world centre for insurance had been established.

[Thomas Walker].
[Thomas Walker].
Romney Pinx.t. Sharp Sculp.
Published Nov.r 5th 1794 at No. 8 Charles Street near Middlesex Hospital, London.
Proof before title. Platemark: 310 x 230mm. (12¼ x 9"). Small tears along right and bottom edges.
Portrait of Thomas Walker (1749 - 1817), almost half-length directed to left, glancing towards the viewer, wearing a plain coat buttoned up with a white waistcoat and cravat, with curly hair brushed forwards over the ear. Walker was a cotton merchant as well as a political reformer, and also a leader of an anti-slavery group. He was also a member of the Manchester Literary and Philosophical Society founded in 1781 to promote improvements in local health and sanitary issues. Walker helped found the Manchester Constitutional Society which advocated parliamentary reform and equality for dissenters. This was not seen favourably by the supporters of 'church and king' and he was accused of conspiring to overthrow the king, constitution and government. A trial was held at the Lancaster Assizes in June 1794 but Walker was acquitted because the key witness, Thomas Dunn, was shown to have lied under oath. After George Romney (Male; 1734 - 1802); scratched-letter state before title and border.
