After his studies of law in Orleans, and possibly Bologna, he became bailiff of Clemont in the county of Beauvaisis, then senschal of Poitou and the Saintonge; he managed to hold some very senior positions in the realm. All of this administrative experience helped form the basis to his principal work: "Coustumes de Beauvoisis" of 1283, which was first printed in 1690. This work was later regarded as one of the best works bearing on old French customary law, and was often referred to with high admiration by Montesquieu, who called him "la lumiere de son temps". [Louis de Bourbon, Prince of Condé] Ypre 1648.
Par le S.r de Beaulieu Ingenieur et Geographe ordinaire du Roy et de M.r le Duc d'Angulen avec privilege de sa Maieste 1646. N. Cochain Sc.
Etching from three plates, on three sheets conjoined, scarce. total 440 x 610mm. Joins loose, trimmed to border at bottom, thread margins on left, a small tear.
An amalgam of a prospect of Ypres with a the decorative medallion portrait of Louis de Bourbon, Prince of Condé (1621-86) when still Duc d'Enghien, from a similar prospect of Mainz. It shows Ypres during the Thirty Years' War, with skirmishes on the fields in front of the city and was drawn by Sebastian de Pontault Beaulieu (c. 1612-74), a military engineer who drew plans of the fortifications of the cities of Europe. The view is within a separately-printed frame-like border (a feature than make Beaulieu's plans instantly recognisable), which has been cut down to find the smaller Ypres prospect.
