[n.d. c.1740]
Altered plate. A rare and fine mezzotint. 351 x 249mm. Cut to the platemark.
Sir Chaloner Ogle (1681-1750) was an Admiral of the Fleet in the British navy. He was of the Kirkley Hall branch of the prominent Northumbrian Ogle family of Northumberland. In 1721 he commanded HMS Swallow leading the fleet in action off the West African coast. In 1722 he defeated the pirate fleet of Bartholomew Roberts, for which success he was awarded a knighthood. He was the only British naval officer to be honoured specifically for his actions against pirates. He also profited financially, taking gold dust from two of Roberts' ships, the Royal Fortune and Ranger. His crew did not receive their share until Ogle was reluctantly forced to give it to them by the legal system, three years later. Captain Chaloner Ogle claimed to have missed out on the treasure which the pirates had left on their third ship, the Little Ranger, when they sailed to their last engagement with the Swallow. By the time Ogle and his men arrived to take the treasure in the Little Ranger it had gone, with Captain Hill of the merchant ship Neptune, who had been trading with the pirates. Several weeks after the defeat of Bartholomew Roberts, however, Captain Ogle and Captain Hill had both sailed across the Atlantic and were in Port Royal at the same time. Even if this is assumed to be a coincidence, it seems nearly inconceivable that Captain Ogle, who was already swindling his own crew, would not have then confronted Captain Hill, who in theory Ogle could easily have had hanged for trading with pirates. It therefore seems likely that the larger part of Bartholomew Robert's treasure ended up in the hands of Captain Ogle, and some part in the hands of Captain Hill. In 1741 as Rear Admiral of the Blue he led the British attack on three forts at Cartagena, Colombia during a disastrous campaign in the War of Jenkins' Ear. In 1742 he was accused of an alleged assault upon Edward Trelawny, Governor of Jamaica but his career survived and he was appointed Admiral of the White and in 1747 Admiral of the Fleet.

Sir Hyde Parker, fifth baronet (1714-1782/3), naval officer. Parker spent his career in the navy and was promoted to rear-admiral in 1778, travelling as second in command in the squadron going out to North America with Vice-Admiral John Byron during the American Revolutionary War (1775-83). After naval victories against the French in the Caribbean, Parker was promoted vice-admiral and commanded a squadron in the North Sea, engaging the Dutch fleet near the Dogger Bank in 1781. After the battle he resigned, blaming himself for the squadrons failure to secure a decisive victory despite the attempts of George III to persuade him otherwise (Parker told the king the navy needed younger commanders and newer ships). Fine mezzotint after the portrait by Romney (in or before 1782/3) in Melford Hall, Suffolk, a version of which is in the National Maritime Museum, London, which shows Parker gesturing to the Dogger Bank action behind him.

London Published by S. Woodburn, 1811.
A fine mezzotint impression. Image 158 x 108mm. Cut to the image and surrounded by an extra paper sheet.
Sir William Penn (1621-1670) was an English admiral, and the father of William Penn, founder of the colony of Pennsylvania. He served his apprenticeship at sea with his father. In the first Civil War he fought on the side of the parliament, and was in command of a ship in the squadron maintained against the king in the Irish seas. The service was arduous and called for both energy and good seamanship. In 1648 he was arrested and sent to London, but was soon released, and sent back as rear admiral in the Assurance. The exact cause of the arrest is unknown, but it may be presumed to have been that he was suspected of being in correspondence with the king's supporters. In the First Anglo-Dutch War, he served in the navy of the Commonwealth of England, commanding squadrons at the battles of the Kentish Knock (1652), Portland, the Gabbard and Scheveningen (1653). In 1654 he accepted the naval command in the expedition to the West Indies sent out by Cromwell. In 1655 he commanded the fleet that launched a bungled attack on La Hispaniola. Afterwards the less desirable island of Jamaica was seized for the Commonwealth regime. On their return he and his military colleague Venables were sent to the Tower. He made humble submission, and when released retired to the estate he had received from confiscated land in Ireland. In the Second Anglo-Dutch War he was captain of the fleet at the Battle of Lowestoft in 1665 under James Stuart, Duke of York.

Sir Walter Ralegh (or Raleigh, 1554? - 1618], explorer, published in the 'Heads of Illustrious Persons of Great Britain'. He sponsored one of the first English attempts to colonise North America, the ill-fated Roanoke colony, and led two expeditions to discover El Dorado, the City of Gold, in South America. Ralegh was also 'a soldier in Ireland; a sailor [...] celebrant of colonialism (in his 'Discoverie of the Large, Rich and Bewtiful Empire of Guiana' of 1596); a poet; a dancer; a royal favourite who brilliantly mastered the Elizabethan court rhetoric of chaste love only to plummet into disfavour after a marriage the Queen didn't like; an enthusiastic brawler who laughed throughout the Earl of Essex's execution; and atheist; and an associate of what Nicholas Popper calls "poet-ruffians". He was also [...] a prisoner, condemned to the Tower of London for his part in a plot to promote Arabella Stuart to the throne.' (Adam Smyth, 'Wrong Rivers' in TLS June 14 2013).

Capt. Edw.d Riou.
Capt. Edw.d Riou.
From the Miniature by Shelley. Engraved by Ja.s Heath A.R.A.
[n.d., c.1800.]
Stipple, open letter proof. Sheet: 190 x 150mm (7½ x 6''). Trimmed. Crease in bottom left border.
A portrait of naval officer Edward Riou (1762-1801) who served as midshipman of Capt. James Cook's Third Voyage to Australia and received his command of the former frigate HMS Guardian transporting convicts to Australia. Attempting to replenish their fresh water supplies the ship Riou ordered the Guardian be sailed close to an iceberg, boats were sent out to gather the ice but when all had returned a fog descended hiding the iceberg from view. After careful sailing, using lookouts it seemed the ship had managed to avoid hitting the iceberg, however the ship was caught in a gust of wind and was driven into the wall of ice nearly sinking outright. After several attempts to stop the flooding into the damaged hull, most of the crew abandoned ship. Despite fully anticipating his death, Riou refused to leave his ship, and he and a few others were left to attempt the nearly impossible task of navigating the sinking ship several hundred leagues towards the Cape of Good Hope. After nine weeks at sea, and with continued labour and endurance, Riou successfully navigated his half-sunk ship back to port, saving the lives of those who had elected to remain with him. Riou negotiated the pardon of the few remaining convicts left on board.

[Lord George Brydges Rodney].
Sir Joshua Reynolds pinxt. P.W. Tomkins pupil of F. Bartolozzi sculpt.
Publish'd according to Act of Parlt. April 26th 1781 by I. Walker Strand.
Stipple engraving printed in sanguine, with very large margins. 125 x 175mm. 5 x 7". Light paper discolouration.
George Brydges Rodney, 1st Baron Rodney [1719 - 1792] became a national hero when in 1780 he defeated a Spanish fleet off Cape St. Vincent, thus relieving Gibraltar. His crowning victory was at the Battle of the Saintes off Dominica, when on 12 April with thirty-five sail of the line he defeated the Comte de Grasse, who had thirty-three sail. The French inferiority in numbers was more than counterbalanced by the greater size and superior sailing qualities of their ships, yet five were taken and one sunk, after eleven hours' fighting. This important battle saved Jamaica and ruined French naval prestige.
