Dr. Martin Luther...
Dr. Martin Luther...
Copenhagen, zu finden bey Joh. Rud. Thiele, in der grossen Helligengeiststrasse. [n.d., c.1800.]
Rare broadside with a coloured woodcut, laid on album sheet. 300 x 185mm (11¾ x 7¼"). Trimmed to printed border of woodcut, some staining.
A full-length portrait of Martin Luther (1483-1546), standing in a library, book in hand. Behind him stands a swan, often used as a symbol for Luther because of a prophesy by John Hus, the Bohemian philosopher. About to be burned at the stake in 1415, Hus said ''You are now going to burn a goose ['Hus' in the Bohemian language], but in a century you will have a swan which you can neither roast nor boil''. 102 years later Luther published his 'Ninety-five Theses', so forever became linked with a swan. Published by Johan Rudolph Thiele (1736-1815), publisher in Helliggejststræde (now Valkendorfsgade).

Dr. Martin Luther
Dr. Martin Luther "Hier siehe ich, ich kann nicht anders, Gott helfe mir! Amen" [...]
Lucas Cranach Pinxt Fr. Muller Sculp.t
Inst. Bibl. Excud.t
Line engraving, platemark approx. 520 x 400mm (20½ x 15¾"), with very large margins. Uncut.
Martin Luther (1483-1546), theologian whose writings inspired the Protestant Reformation. In 1517 he famously published his '95 theses' attacking papal abuses and the sale of indulgences. Excommunicated by the Catholic church and declared a heretic, Luther's ideas were the foundation of a new conception of Christianity. He also translated the Bible into German to make it accessible to a larger number of people, contributing to the growth of the German language in the process. Engraving supposedly after Cranach, although far more in the idiom of the nineteenth century than Cranach's portraits of Luther.

[n.d. c.1700.]
Rare engraving. 133 x 70mm. 5¼ x 2¾". Cut and laid on separate sheet.
Lodowicke Muggleton (1609-1698) was an English plebeian religious thinker, who gave his name to Muggletonianism. Worked from 1631 as a tailor for his cousin, William Reeve, whose brother John co-founded the Muggletonian sect. In 1651 he experienced a series of revelations. He declared himself and John Reeve the two witnesses mentioned in Revelation and claimed they had been given the power to bless believers and curse sceptics. In 1656 Muggleton and Reeve published the highly controversial The Divine Looking-Glass, in which the doctrines of the sect were developed. Amongst these were the beliefs that the distinction of the three persons in the Trinity were merely nominal and that God was a corporeal, embodied being. In 1677 Muggleton was imprisoned for blasphemy. The last Muggletonian, Philip Noakes, died in 1979.
