A pair of pyramids in Meroë, a kingdom of the Upper Nile, set on an island, a temple between them. It was published in Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach's 'Entwürst Einer Historischen Architectur', a study of the architecture of the ancient world. Fischer von Erlach (1656-1723) was a successful Austrian architect: his baroque works include the Schönbrunn Palace, Karlskirche, and the Austrian National Library in Vienna. He also studied ancient architecture, publishing 'A Plan of Civil and Historical Architecture' in 1721, taking on classical influences in his building.

Plate from 'Sculpturae veteris admiranda [...]' (1680), a partial translation of 'Academia todesca della architectura, scultura & pittura' by Joachim Sandrart (1606-88). Sandrart was a prominent German painter now also regarded as one of the most important German writers on art, and the 'Academia', which dealt with ancient to contemporary art, remains the most important historical source on artists such as Elsheimer and Grunewald. Most of the etchings were made after Sandrart's own designs.

A scarce view of the Island Philae from the north, lithographed by Gustave W. Seitz for 'Carl Werner's Nile Sketches', 1875. At the front is Trajan's Kiosk, with the pylons of the Temple of Isis behind left. Because of the building of the Aswan High Dam the whole complex had to be moved to the nearby Island of Agilkia. Carl Friedrich Heinrich Werner (1808-94), a German watercolourist, traveled through Spain in 1856-7 and visited Egypt and the Holy Land in 1862-4 (publishing his book 'Jerusalem, Bethlehem and the Holy Places' in 1865). He was one of the few non-Muslims able to gain access to paint the interior of the Dome of the Rock.

A dinner provided for his European guests by an Arab sheikh (sheik). Title in English and French; numbered 'Pl XVIII' lower right. From a series of prints depicting the customs, manners, costume etc. of Turkey and Egypt, drawn and engraved by Richard Dalton (1715? - 1791). Dalton, who was trained as an artist, went to Rome to pursue his studies, and in 1749 travelled with Roger Kynaston and John Frederick to Naples and Sicily, where they joined a party consisting of James Caulfeild, Earl of Charlemont, Francis Pierpoint Burton, and others. From thence Dalton accompanied Lord Charlemont on his tour to Constantinople/Istanbul, Greece, and Egypt. Dalton managed to obtain the position of librarian to George III. He was subsequently appointed keeper of the pictures and antiquary to his majesty. He was one of the original members of the Incorporated Society of Artists in 1765, and became their treasurer. He was elected a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1767. 'Antiquities and Views in Greece and Egypt, with the Manners and Customs of the Inhabitants, from Drawings made on the Spot.' was published in London in 1791 and is all three of Dalton's Tours in one volume.

A back street of Suez with an Arab astride a donkey, after a watercolour by Eduard Hildebrandt (1819-1869). He travelled in the Americas in the 1840s and through Egypt to the Far East in the 1860s. This is one of a collection of chromolithographs from his watercolours, published as 'die Reise um die Erde'. The chromolithograph is trimmed to the image as normal and mounted on card, in imitation of the presentation of a watercolour.

Egyptian women relaxing; a black serving-woman bringing drinks on a tray. Numbered 'Pl XXI' lower right. From a series of prints depicting the customs, manners, costume etc. of Turkey and Egypt, drawn and engraved by Richard Dalton (1715? - 1791). Dalton, who was trained as an artist, went to Rome to pursue his studies, and in 1749 travelled with Roger Kynaston and John Frederick to Naples and Sicily, where they joined a party consisting of James Caulfeild, Earl of Charlemont, Francis Pierpoint Burton, and others. From thence Dalton accompanied Lord Charlemont on his tour to Constantinople/Istanbul, Greece, and Egypt. Dalton managed to obtain the position of librarian to George III. He was subsequently appointed keeper of the pictures and antiquary to his majesty. He was one of the original members of the Incorporated Society of Artists in 1765, and became their treasurer. He was elected a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1767. 'Antiquities and Views in Greece and Egypt, with the Manners and Customs of the Inhabitants, from Drawings made on the Spot.' was published in London in 1791 and is all three of Dalton's Tours in one volume.

The artist, Achille-Constant-Theodore Emile Prisse d'Avennes (1807-79), was a French orientalism who embraced Islam and took the name Edris-Effendi.
