Anthony Shirley (1565-1635) was an English traveller, whose imprisonment in 1603 by King James I was an important event because it caused the British House of Commons to assert one of its privileges, freedom of its members from arrest, in a document known as 'The Form of Apology and Satisfaction'. Published in 1613 Travels in Persia.

A head and shoulders portrait of Sir Anthony Shirley (or Sherley, 1565-c.1636), an English adventurer and opportunist, in Persian dress. He had become the Shah Abbas the Great's representative in Europe in 1598, visiting Moscow, Prague and Rome in his behalf, but ran up huge debts and alienated his Persian associates. He abandoned the embassy and from 1601-4 he was living in Venice, working as a spy for Spain and Scotland, for which he was ejected from the city. Subsequently he entered the services of the Holy Roman Emperor then the king of Spain, but always offending his paymasters and running up debts. He died in obscurity c.1636.

A portrait of Welsh/American explorer Henry Morton Stanley (1841-1904), who grew up in Wales but emigrated to America in 1859, after his arrival he served in the American Civil War and US Navy and then became a journalist. It was his work as journalist which took him out to Africa in search of David Livingstone. He stayed in Africa for many years working in the Congo with the Belgians. He returned to the UK in the later 1880s and was knighted in 1899.

Sir George Leonard Staunton (1737-1801) was an employee of the East India Company, diplomat, and a botanist. He accompanied George, Lord McCartney to Madras to negotiate peace with Tipu Sultan. In 1787 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society and in 1793 he was named Secretary to the British mission to the Chinese Imperial Court.

He is best known for the discovery and sale of the 118-carat blue diamond that he subsequently sold to Louis XIV of France in 1668. Lost during the French Revolution it is believed that it was recut as the famous 'Hope Diamond'. Stated here as 'from the life' by the engraver Johann Hainzelman but elsewhere said to be after a portrait by Nicolas de Largillière.

Portrait of Edward Terry, half length in an oval, wearing skull-cap, collar and gown, and holding a book; in lower left spandril, a ship; on shelf below, calipers and a globe. Frontispiece to his 'Voyage to East-India'. Edward Terry (1590-1660) was a writer of travels and in 1615-16 he went out to India as chaplain with a fleet sent by the London East India Company, sailing in the Charles with Benjamin Joseph, commander of the expedition. In his account of the voyage Terry describes a fight with a Portugese carrack, in which Joseph was killed on 6 August 1616.

Jean de Thévenot (June 16, 1633 – November 28, 1667) was a French traveller in the East, who wrote extensively about his journeys. He was also a linguist, natural scientist and botanist. He was born in Paris and received his education in the Collège de Navarre.

The Hon. Frederick Walpole (1822-1876), naval commander, author and Conservative MP for Norfolk from 1868 until his death. His account of a voyage he made as a lieutenant, 'Four Years in the Pacific in Her Majesty's Ship Collingwood from 1844 to 1848', is regarded as an important first hand account of Hawaii. Another book, 'The Ansayrii, and the Assassins' (1851) described the Middle East. A younger son of the Earl of Orford, Frederick's son Robert became fifth Earl in 1894. The artist, George Bridges Black, died later in the year this portrait was completed.

James Wathen (c.1751-1828), traveller and artist. He went on walking excursions in all parts of Great Britain and Ireland, contributing topographical descriptions & sketches to the ‘Gentleman's Magazine,’ under the sobriquet of 'Jemmy Sketch'. In 1811 he accompanied Captain James Prendergast in his ship the Hope on a voyage to India and China, in which he visited Madras, Penang, Canton, Macao, the Cape of Good Hope, and St. Helena. In 1814 he published an account of his travels, under the title ‘Journal of a Voyage to India and China’ (London, 1814, 2 vols. 4to), illustrated with twenty-four coloured prints from his own drawings. Sir John Woolmore (1756-1838) was a captain with the East India Company and during his long career he sailed several East Indiamen to the Far East from London. He was also one of the leading figures behind the establishment of the East India Dock Company. He served as Deputy Master of the Trinity House from 1825 until 1834.

Using his inheritance as security against his creditors he left England permanently in 1762 and travelled in the Middle East as an enthusiastic archaeologist for a little over a decade. In 1773, Edward settled in Venice and lived, according to one of his contemporaries, with 'the manners, habit and magnificence of a Turk.' For the 'European Magazine' periodical.

John Young, councellor to King Kamehameha of Hawaii. Young was born in Crosley, England, in 1744. He sailed in the winter of 1789-90 from New York to the Hawaiian Islands on the Eleanora, under Capt. Simon Metcalfe. When the Eleanora arrived at Hawaii, Young went ashore to explore the countryside, armed with a musket and a sword. There, he was taken captive by Kamehameha. He remained in Hawaii and became one of the king's most trusted advisors, living to the age of 91. His descendants all had the blood of chiefs flowing in their veins, for his wives were women of high rank. Plate to 'Souvenirs d'un aveugle (blind man)' by Jacques Etienne Victor Arago (1790 - 1855). A French writer, artist and explorer, Arago joined Louis de Freycinet on his 1817 voyage around the world aboard the ship Uranie, which inspired his witty 'Voyage autour du monde'. Although he lost his sight in 1837, he went on travelling and writing for the theatre.
