The elegant facade of the west London residence of Henry Fox, first Baron Holland (1705 - 1774). Created in 1605 for the diplomat Sir Walter Cope, most of this Jacobean mansion was destroyed by German firebombing during the Blitz in 1940; today only the east wing extends above the ground floor. Fox held the posts of Secretary for War, Southern Secretary and Paymaster of the forces, and was the father of Charles James Fox.

The engraved titlepage of a herbal by Jean Pre´vost (1585-1631), head of the Botanical Gardens in Padua, the epicentre of renaissance medicine and anti-clerical sentiment. It was an influential work: the English edition of 1670, 'Medicaments for the poor', was intended to break the monopoly of the apothecaries who used Latin to obscure their knowledge.

The influence of the West is shown through the european fashion the Chinese figures are wearing, a shop in the background is called 'Marchand de Mode de Paris', and in the foreground a boy sells rats.
