[n.d. c.1820.]
Scarce lithograph, India proof. Sheet 610 x 507mm (24 x 20"). Mount staining, paper toning, Laid on card.
A wonderful heroic portrait of a Gunner next to his cannon. Colonel Sir Augustus Simon Frazer, K.C.B, (1776-1835). A month before his fourteenth birthday he was admitted as a Gentleman Cadet into the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich. In 1793 he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Royal Regiment of Artillery and in December he joined the army in Flanders, then under the command of HRH the Duke of York. He was promoted Lieutenant in January 1794 and saw action in the Flanders campaign, returning to England with the army in May 1795 when he was appointed to the Royal Horse Artillery (RHA). In September 1799, now a Captain-Lieutenant, he again went on active service, to North Holland, returning to England in November. He became a captain in 1803 and was given command of a troop of RHA which, in 1807 he took to South America where he commanded the Artillery of the expedition against Buenos Aires. Promoted Major in June 1811 he went to the Peninsula in November 1812, and it is from this date that the letters begin. In April 1813 Frazer was appointed to command the Horse Artillery of the army and as such saw action at Salamanca, Osma, Vitoria, St Sebastian, the crossings of the Bidassoa, Nive and Adour. He was severely wounded at the siege of Bayonne on 27 February 1814 but was back for the final battle of Toulouse in April which brought hostilities against the French to a close. He then returned to England, receiving the Peninsular Medal with two clasps and KCB, and appointed to command of the Artillery in the eastern district. He was promoted Lieutenant-Colonel in December 1814. When war with France broke out again on Napoleon’s escape from Elba Sir Augustus joined the allied army in Flanders, under the Duke of Wellington, in March 1815 and resumed command of the Horse Artillery, the post he held during the battle of Waterloo. On return to England he was appointed Commander HQ RHA, Woolwich until promoted Colonel in January 1825. Subsequently he was Assistant Inspector of the Ordnancer Carriage Department, and finally Director of the Royal Laboratory, a position he held till his death in 1835. Frazer was a prolific letter writer and the letters contained in a book written to his wife, Lady Emma Frazer and to his wife’s sister and her husband, Major and Mrs Moore. They give a fascinating account of the stirring events of the time. 140 of them were written during the Peninsular campaign and a further 41 during the Waterloo campaign.

General Charles Gordon (1833 - 1885)In I882 there arose in the Soudan, a province of Upper Egypt, one Mohammed Ahmed, who called himself the Mahdi or Messiah, and invited all true believers to join in a holy war against the Christians. Thousands of wild tribesmen flocked to his banner, and in the following year he annihilated an army of eleven thousand English and Egyptians that had attempted to subdue the revolt. Rather than send more soldiers to die in the deserts of the Upper Nile, England decided to abandon the province. But first the thousands of Europeans who had taken refuge in Khartoum and other towns of the Soudan must be rescued from their perilous position. In this crisis the Government turned to the one man who could effect the withdrawal if it was still possible, and in January, 1884, appointed General Gordon to superintend the evacuation of the Soudan.

Charles Gordon-Lennox (1791-1860) in his peer's robes, wearing his Waterloo Medal. As a soldier he served on Wellington's staff in the Peninsular War, during which time he was shot in the chest, the musket ball never being removed. At Waterloo he was ADC to the Prince of Orange until the prince was wounded, after which he replaced the wounded Sir Alexander Gordon as ADC to Wellington. As a politician he was MP for Chichester 1812 until 1819, when he entered the Lords. An ultra-Tory, he campaigned against Catholic emancipation, free trade and the repeal of the Corn Laws. The 1847 introduction of the Military General Service Medal for the survivors of the campaigns between 1793 and 1814 (French Revolutionary War and Napoleonic Wars) was primarily due to his enlistment of the support of Queen Victoria.

Francis Gore, (1769-1852) was a British officer and British colonial administrator. Gore was commissioned into the 44th Foot in 1787, but transferred to the 54th Foot in 1794 and the 17th Light Dragoons in 1795. He retired with the rank of major and then became Lieutenant-Governor of Upper Canada from 1806 to 1811. Gore's administration built roads, reorganised the militia and founded schools. He was absent on leave during the War of 1812 as military authorities ran the province. His stand-in during this time was Isaac Brock, who "sought an active role in the impending war as keenly as Gore sought to escape it". Gore resumed his role as lieutenant-governor from 1815 to 1817. During his second term, Gore prorogued the Legislative Assembly after it challenged his ban on issuing land grants to American refugees and made other criticisms of his administration. Robert MacIntosh, in his book Earliest Toronto, describes Gore as "a man who was clearly the most incompetent and disliked Lieutenant Governor in the history of Upper Canada". Gore Vale, a north-south street on the eastern boundary of Trinity Bellwoods Park on the west side of downtown Toronto, is named after him.

Lieutenant General Sir Gerald Graham, VC GCB GCMG (1831-1899) was an English recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. He was 23 years old, and a lieutenant in the Corps of Royal Engineers, British Army during the Crimean War when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC. On 18 June 1855 in the Crimea, Lieutenant Graham, accompanied by a sapper showed determined gallantry at the head of a ladder party at the assault on the Redan at Sebastopol. He also went out on numerous occasions to bring in wounded officers and men. During the Second Anglo-Chinese War he again displayed great courage and skill and, although seriously wounded in the storming of the Taku forts (August 21, 1860), subsequently entered Peking with the victors. Following his return to England in 1861, he was for 16 years commanding engineer successively at Brighton, Aldershot, Montreal, Chatham, Manchester, and York. In 1877 he was appointed assistant director of works for barracks at the War Office. In 1882 he accompanied Sir Garnet Wolseley to Egypt as brigadier general, and his forces had a great share in the victorious campaign against Urabi Pasha. In 1884 he took the field against Osman Digna, whose army he defeated at El-Teb and Tamai. In the meantime he had urged a plan for the assistance of Gordon, which, however, was not accepted. Graham was made a G.C.B. in 1896, and a colonel commandant of the Corps of Royal Engineers in 1899.
