Lith. de Engelmann, rue du F. Montmartre No.6 [1827-35]
Lithograph, printed area 220 x 300mm (8¾ x 11¾").
The district of São Cristóvão in the north of Rio de Janeiro. Plate from 'Voyage pittoresque au Brésil' (1827-35), a volume of lithographs after drawings by Johann Moritz Rugendas (1802-58). Rugendas, who came from a family including several notable artists, travelled to Brazil in 1821 as draughtsman with the Russian diplomat Baron de Langsdorff’s scientific expedition. However, Rugendas left the expedition, discovering Brazil for himself and returning to Europe in 1825 with the extraordinary collection of drawings which provided the material for 'Voyage pittoresque'. Encouraged by the German scientist and explorer Alexander von Humboldt, Rugendas returned to Latin America in 1831, living until 1845 in Mexico and Chile with shorter stays in Argentina, Peru, Bolivia, and Uruguay, and drawing and painting prolifically throughout this time. He returned to Bavaria, where nearly 3000 drawings and paintings were acquired by the local government, but he then went back to live in Brazil between 1845 and 1846.

A Map of the Falkland Islands in the Latitude of 51°, 22' South, Longitude 64°, 30' West.
A Map of the Falkland Islands in the Latitude of 51°, 22' South, Longitude 64°, 30' West.
J. Lodge Sculp.
Gent. Mag. Oct.r 1770.
Engraving. 180 x 250mm, 7 x 9¾". Folded, as issued.
Chart of the Falkland Islands, published in the Gentleman's Magazine to accompany an account of the confrontation between the Spanish and British over possession of the islands, which nearly led to full-scale war. As it was issued only six years after the founding of the first (French) colony, it is not very accurate, with West Falkland far too wide. The coastal profiles show the rocky islands on the approaches to Saunders Island, where the British had founded Port Egmont in 1766. A decade later the British abandoned Port Egmont because of the economic pressures of the build up to the American Revolution.

Benard dir.
[Paris 1787.]
Engraving. 240 x 320mm, 9½ x 12½".
Map of the Falkland Islands after the map by John Strong, an English captain who traversed Falkland Sound in 1690. Sir Richard Hawkins (son of Sir John Hawkins of Spanish Armada fame) is credited with discovering the island in 1574, naming it Hawkins' Maidenland (after Elizabeth the Virgin Queen). However at that time he would have been aged twelve. In fact he visted the islands in 1594, preceded by Dutchman Sebald de Weert in 1600 and English explorer John Davis in 1592. Engraved by Bénard for a French edition of the Official Account of Cook's Voyages, which included accounts of other English explorers in the South Seas.

Plan of the Principal Field of Action between the Rivers Cottica and Marawina; with a Sketch of the Manner of Encamping in the Woods of Surinam.
London, Published Dec.r 1.st 1791, by J. Johnson, St. Paul's Church Yard.
Engraving. Plate 210 x 451mm. 8¼ x 17¾". Slight offsetting; folds as issued, with tears into lower edges of fold.
A map showing the action against the rebellious slaves; the insert map shows how the camp was designed so that the match was somewhat against surprise attacks. Nr. 1 is the cabin of Colonel Fourgeaud; 2. The huts of the officers; 3. The huts of the other men in a large triangle; 4. Ammunition, provisions, medicines, etc; 5. Campfires at each angle; 6. Trees or barns to cabins to build; 7. A creek to the camp of fresh water supply; and 8. The surrounding forest. Published in "Narrative, of a Five Years’ Expedition, Against the Revolted Negroes of Surinam, in Guiana, on the Wild Coast of South America", by Captain John Gabriel Stedman. The Dutch captured the British colony of Suriname during the Second Anglo-Dutch War (1667). Under the West India Company it was developed as a plantation slave society and became a primary destination for the Dutch slave trade. The brutal regime caused high mortality; despite the import of 300,000 slaves between 1668 and 1823, the population never grew beyond 50,000. ‘Maroonage’ became the major form of resistance. Fugitive slaves, or ‘maroons’, escaped inland to form permanent communities from where they waged a campaign of guerrilla warfare against the Dutch. In 1774 the Scottish-Dutch soldier John Gabriel Stedman witnessed the brutal oppression of slaves during a campaign against the maroons, which he described in this book. The work contained 80 engravings by various hands which are generally acknowledged to have been based on drawings made by Captain J.G. Stedman, although only two of the plates bear his name. Stedman was a personal friend of William Blake’s and it is likely that William Blake modified Stedman’s designs, being those of an amateur artist. From the sole surviving watercolour by Stedman for this work, it is known that the engravers involved were allowed considerable liberty in adapting Stedman’s designs. The book was adopted by those who advocated the abolition of the slave trade, though Stedman was thought to support reform rather than abolition.

V. Adam del.t Dess d'ap nat. par Rugendas Lithog. par Maurin
Lith. de Engelmann, rue du Faub Montmartre No.6 a Paris [1827-35]
Lithograph, printed area 220 x 320mm (8¾ x 12½"). Crease.
The Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon, in the Lagoa district of Rio de Janeiro.
