Illustrated Dutch broadside on the Siege of Derry, 1689; etching of the battle with title and key below, very scarce. Sheet 270 x 460mm, 10½ x 18". Presented with four related letterpress fragments of verse, in Dutch, French, Latin and English, with decorative vignettes; all glued to a large folded scrap sheet. The Siege of Derry (Londonderry) took place in Ireland from 18 April to 28 July 1689, during the Williamite War in Ireland. The city, a Williamite stronghold, was besieged by a Jacobite army until it was relieved by Royal Navy ships. The siege is commemorated annually in August by the Apprentice Boys of Derry. The battle scene is by Romeyn de Hooghe (Dutch, 1645 - 1708), a propagandist for William of Orange (King William III). A panorama of another battlefield, the 'Seige of Bonn' (1689), also by de Hooghe, was originally issued by Johannes Tangena on the same sheet, directly below. The two plates were often separated, and the letterpress commemorates both battles.

A Birds Eye View of the Battle of Tel-el-Kebir.
A Birds Eye View of the Battle of Tel-el-Kebir. From Official Plans and Sketches by our Special Agents and Military Officers present at the Action.
The Graphic. Special Gratis Supplement. 28th October, 1882.
Photolithographic illustration in sepia, folding supplement to 'The Graphic' newspaper, scarce. Image 350 x 535mm. 13¾ x 21". Margins a little creased/bumped, with a closed tear lower left.
The battle scene is captioned to the margin with names of the principal British officers and regiments. Tel-el-Kebir lies at a strategic point on the railway between Ismailia and Cairo. On 13 September 1882 it was the scene of the final, decisive action of the Egyptian War, fought between the British (then joint rulers of Egypt, with France) and Arabi Pasha, an Egyptian Army officer and leader of the revolt against foreign rule. Lieutenant-General Sir Garnet Wolseley (1833-1913), commanded the Expeditionary Force which was outnumbered two to one. However, in a bold operation, he led a long night march to make a surprise dawn attack upon the heavily-fortified Egyptian position at Tel-el-Kebir. The Egyptian forces were routed, opening the way for the entry into Cairo, where Arabs surrendered on 14 September.

Praelium ad Warsaviam dies Tertius 20 July 1656.
Dahlbergh ad Vivum Delineavit. W. Swidde sculp[Stock] Holmiae.
[Stockholm, n.d., c.1700.]
Etching, 300 x 565mm. 11¾ x 22¼". Creases; tear to centre of image. Laid on board.
Bird's eye view of the Battle of Warsaw (with that city in the distance upper left) on July 18, 1656 – July 20, 1656, between the armies of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and of Sweden and Brandenburg. It was a major battle in the war between Poland and Sweden in the period 1655 - 1660, also known as The Deluge (part of the Northern Wars). Latin key explanations to points of interest are set into a decorative cartouche lower left. A vignette portrait of the victorious Charles X Gustav (1622 – 1660), King of Sweden above this. In the battle, a smaller Swedish-Brandenburg force gained victory over a Polish-Lithuanian force superior in numbers, though in the long term the victory achieved little. Polish-Lithuanian losses were insignificant, and even though Swedish forces were able to reoccupy Warsaw, they were forced to abandon it soon afterward. Engraved by Dutchman Willem Swidde (1660 c. - 1714) who worked in Amsterdam and Stockholm.
