[Untitled folio of eleven lithographic sketches of French architecture, each signed K.H. Digby.]
[n.d., one plate watermarked W.Spear 1815.]
Oblong folio, 11 lithographs stitched in blue wrappers. Wear to wrappers and edges.
A record of a tour around France, with sketches of Amiens, Rouen, Montpelier & Nimes, particularly noting the Roman antiquities, hear illustrated with early lithographs. The windows of opportunity for an English artist were few during this period, probably either during the Peace of Amiens, 1802, or immediately after the fall of Napoleon in 1814. A scarce work, not in Abbey: the only reference we can find is 'Lumley's Bibliographical Advertiser' of 1845, recording for sale at Lumley's Bookshop 'XI Rough Lithographic Sketches, by K.H. Digby, of French Architectural Antiquities, 5s'.

The war ended with the Treaty of Adrianople, which increased Russian dominance around the Black Sea area and Georgia, and, most importantly, forced the Sultan to promise autonomy for Greece.

Lithograph on grey paper, printed area 180 x 260mm (7 x 10¼).
Unusual view of Eisenach in Germany, with the Wartburg in the distance. Wartburg is the place where Martin Luther translated the New Testament into German, and is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Amateur lithograph by the army officer and politician Frederick William Trench (c.1777-1859), whose father owned Heywood, Ballynakill in Queen's County. Trench was also keenly interested in architecture: in 1815 he proposed a vast monument to British naval and military victories over France on the site which became Trafalgar Square, and in 1824 he launched a project for an embankment on the north side of the Thames (in conjunction with which a long print of the project was produced).

To the Right Hon.ble Earl Spencer, This View of Porto Ferrajo, from within the Bay, is with great respect inscribed by his Lordships obedient Servant, James Weir.
Drawn by Capt.n James Weir. Engraved by F. Jukes.
London, Published by Ja.s Daniell, 480, Strand, April, 1814.
Aquatint with large margins, printed in colours and hand finished. 275 x 390mm, 10¾ x 15¼". Repaired damage in margin.
A view of the Fort at Portoferraio on the island of Elba. Major James Weir of the Royal Marines commanded two companies of the Maltese Light Infantry (or 'Cacciatori Maltesi', which translates as 'Maltese Hunters), which garrisoned Portoferraio and took part in the defence of Elba against the French in 1800. The engraver Jukes originally published four of Weir's views of Portoferraio in 1799; this edition by James Daniell seems to have been published to capitalise on renewed interest in Elba because of Napoleon's exile there. However this evaporated with his escape and subsequent exile to the far more remote St Helena.

Espoz y Mina first established himself running a guerilla group after Napoleon actions in Spain in 1810, and soon after the national government made him a commander-in-chief. Later in the Peninsular Wars he served under the Duke of Wellington. The restoration of Ferdinand VII saw him fall from favour, and he tried to organise two uprisings against the king. Having escaped to England, he returned to Spain following Ferdinand's death, although the government continued to fear his radicalism.
