Henry The Eighth
Henry The Eighth King of England, France, & Ireland, &c.&c.
Goldar sc.
[London: J. Harrison] Publish'd as the Act directs, May 14th 1784.
Copper engraving, 320 x 220mm. 12½ x 8¾".
Oval portrait of King Henry VIII (1491 - 1547; reigned 1509-47). Henry VIII succeeded his father Henry VII in 1509. He is well known for his six marriages and for ordering the dissolution of religious houses which took place between 1535 and 1539. Aided by his ministers, Cardinal Wolsey and Thomas Cromwell, his reign was characterised by ambition abroad and ruthlessness at home. His quest for a male heir and a divorce from his first wife Catherine of Aragon led to his establishing himself as head of the Church in England in place of the Pope in 1535. For the English translation of Rapin de Thoyras's 'History of England', John Harrison 1784-89.

Engraving. Mounted on an album page. Plate 322 x 191mm. 12¾ x 7½". Some staining in the margins.
Catherine Howard (c.1521-1542), was the fifth wife of Henry VIII of England. She was however she was beheaded after less than two years of marriage to Henry on the grounds of treason, meaning adultery committed while married to the King. Catherine was stripped of her title as queen and imprisoned in Syon House, Middlesex, through the winter of 1541. Catherine's relatives were also detained in the Tower, except her uncle Thomas, Duke of Norfolk, who had sufficiently detached himself from the scandal. All of the Howard prisoners were tried, found guilty of concealing treason, and sentenced to life imprisonment and forfeiture of goods. In time, however, they were released with their goods restored. Catherine herself remained in suspension until Parliament passed a bill of attainder, on 21 January 1542, that made it treason - punishable by death - for a queen consort to fail to disclose her sexual history to the king within 20 days of their marriage, or to incite someone to have adultery with her. This solved the matter of Catherine's supposed pre-contract and made her unequivocally guilty. Catherine was taken to the Tower of London on 10 February 1542. On 11 February, Henry signed the bill of attainder into law, and Catherine's execution was scheduled for 7 a.m. on 13 February.

Iacobus dei Gratia Magnae Britanniae Franciae et Hiberniae Rex, Fidei Defensor etc.

Engraving. 300 x 190mm. 11¾ x 7½".
Portrait of King James I (1566-1625), engraved in an oval frame after an unkown artist. On the rear is a page of printed text, possibly Flemish, in Gothic script. Head and shoulders, looking to the viewer, with a ruff around his neck and wearing an ermine cloak. Around the King's neck is the artist's impression of the Order of the Garter, the central image being more like a rider on a racehorse set in a round rather than an oval shield. On the King's hat is a large feather with a fleur-de-lys jewel. Possibly after a portrait by Paul van Somer (see full-length in Windsor Castle) - very similar face pattern.
