Pair of very rare & fine mezzotints, with large margins. Platemark: 335 x 375mm (13¼ x 14¾") each.
A bare interior with a man sitting smoking at a table with a tankard at his elbow, his wife sitting with her head bowed beside him, a little girl pawing at her skirts, a baby turning on a straw bed, its clothes in disarray, and a little boy gnawing on a bone in front of the table, next to a barrel, with a dog jumping up at him. Tattered clothes form curtains around a bed behind them. [&] A cottage interior with a man wearing a round-brimmed hat decorated with straw, returning home, holding his son's hand, and dropping some coins into his wife's apron, as she sits to right holding a sleeping baby, while a little girl sits on the floor with a doll, raising her arms to greet her brother.

Morning: Interior of a stable, with men, dogs and horses; a man tying a collar on a dog, his gun resting against the wall, a horse behind him, another tethered outside, and a third standing ready with a man in a smock leading it by the bridle; and Evening: Villagers sitting outside a thatched inn, with the sign of a lion, two talking at the porch, one sitting with his dogs and gun, the other holding up a dead rabbit, a little girl next to him, a third inside, leaning against the window-ledge, and a fourth setting out down the hill to right, leading a saddled horse.

Published by Antoine Suntach, one of numerous Parisian publishers who supplied copies of English stipples in response to continental 'anglomania'.
