Engraving after a painting by Gaspar Dughet (1615-75), who often used the name of his brother-in-law and teacher, Nicolas Poussin. Along with Claude Lorrain, Dughet was one of the landscape painters whose works were best-known to British audiences in the 18th century. His landscapes, disseminated through prints such as this, were highly influential on the nascent English landscape school. One of 830 emblematic views made for Daniel Meisner's (1585-c.1625) 'Thesaurus philopoliticus', also called 'Politisches Schatzkästlein', published in two volumes, 1623-26 and 1627-32. Each volume contained eight parts of 52 prints per part (there is one part containing merely 50 prints). Kieser made some of the etchings himself; others were made by Sebastian Furck, Georg Keller, Matthäus Merian and Johann Eckard Löffler among others.

The Teatro delle Acque (''Water Theater'') of the Villa Aldobrandini, built by Carlo Maderno (1556-1629) and Orazio Olivieri for Cardinal Pietro Aldobrandini. The current owner, Prince Camillo Aldobrandini, tells that the staues on the balustrade shown here were taken by Napoleon, who promised to pay for them on his return from Russia. This is one of 18 plates engraved by Giovanni Battista Falda (1643-78) for 'Le fontane di Frascati', published by Giovanni Giacomo de' Rossi (1627-91).

Polar bears watch from the ice in the forground. By the mid eighteenth century whaling off the coast of Greenland was a fully established enterprise with the South Sea Company funding many excursions to the Arctic.
