Eight Curious prints of Fowl and Fish.
P. And. Rÿsbrack Pinx. G: Vander Gucht Sculpt.
Published by John Boydell Engraver in Cheapside London. [n.d., c.1765.]

Eight plates after Pieter Andreas Rysbrack's (1685-1748) series of four paintings showing fish and four paintings showing fowl. Each bird is numbered and named in a key below the image. John Boydell reissued the plates in 1760s which had previously been published in 1735 by Richard Hylton.

Mezzotint. 150 x 200mm (6 x 8"), with large margins. Slight creasing.
Effigies of a knight in armour and his wife, lying with hands clasped in prayer. The BM's example has a pencil note suggesting this is the tomb of Henry Blount (1602-82) and his wife Hester in Trinity College chapel, Oxford. However the style of tomb seems anachronistic.

Königlich Baierischer Gemälde-Saal zu München und Schleissheim in Steindruck. [A cat in the larder.]
Hamilton pinx: [Philip Ferdinand Van Hamilton] C: Auer del:
[German, Munich?, n.d., c.1823.]
Early and scarce sepia-tinted lithograph, heightened in white. Image 455 x 335mm, 18 x 13¼". Outline border. One repair and minor creasing in margins.
A large dead hare strung up by its legs dominates the centre of the composition; dead birds including tits, finches, thrush and partridge. After Philip Ferdinand Van Hamilton (Flemish, c.1664 - 1750). The engraver is Kaspar Auer (German, 1795 - 1821). This plate formed part of a series of lithographed reproductions after paintings in the royal collection in Munich. "At this early stage lithography had not been developed far enough to reproduce colours, so the artists contented themselves with the addition of one or two tint-stones, from which highlights were scraped out to reveal the white of the paper. But to a public educated on the traditional type of 'gallery' publication, where all the paintings were reproduced in engraving, even this touch of colour would have been a surprise, and would have associated these prints rather with the traditional chiaroscuro woodcut." [A Ceiling design.]
[A Ceiling design.]
C.P.R [con real privilegio].
[French, n.d., c.1680.]
Rare engraving, irregular plate, at most 320 x 630mm (12½ x 24¾"). Bottom corners of plate snipped, outside image area. Centre fold. Evidence of damage to the printing plate, with re-engraving.
Possibly a ceiling design with a classical scene, rather than a fan. A naked woman reclines in a bower, surrounded by animals and birds including a lion, boar, lobster and ostrich. Above three cherubs hold aloft a garland of flowers; to the left is a rider carring a spear; to the right are windheads. The re-engraving is simpler: no attempt has been made to reintroduce a trumpeter, leaving a disembodied horn.

[Frontispiece to 'Pharmacopée Royale, Galenique, et Chymique' by Moyse Charas]
[Frontispiece to 'Pharmacopée Royale, Galenique, et Chymique' by Moyse Charas]
[c.1676]
Engraving, sheet 200 x 150mm (8 x 6"). Trimmed to border. Ms verso (by Charas?): 'Winchilsea. 8 April 1680 Ex dono Authoris'. Fne impression.
Peoples of all parts of the world bring fruits, plants and animals to the French monarch for use in natural medicines. Frontispiece to 'Pharmacopée Royale, Galenique, et Chymique' (first published 1676), an important treatise by the French apothecary Moyse Charas (1619-98) and the first European medical book translated into Chinese. While the frontispiece remained the same for several subsequent editions of the work, the excellent impression substantiates the claim that it was printed by 1680. According to manucript on the album sheet to which it is attached, the print was presented by Charas himself to the Earl of Winchelsea in 1680, and Charas wrote the inscription on the reverse of the print. Charas' other achievements included publishing the formula for theriac, a medicine used to treat a variety of ailments. Due to persecution in France, he also spent time in England, Spain, and the Netherlands.
