A portrait of French laywer Jérôme Bignon (1589-1656), after Philippe de Champaigne (1602 - 1674). Bust directed to right, with curled hair and robes, in an oval frame on ledge with a coat of arms below the image. Jérôme Bignon was a French lawyer born in Paris, who gained great reputation after publishing 'Choréographie, ou description de la Terre Sainte' in 1600, which served to introduce the author to Henry IV, who placed him for some time as a companion to the Duke of Vendôme, and made him tutor to the 'dauphin', and afterwards Louis XIII.

Francis de Bonne, Duke of Lesdiguieres (1543-1626), one of the greatest generals of his age. A protestant who came of age during the French Wars of Religion, Lesdiguieres distinguished himself both in France and in the ongoing wars in Italy. From 'Les Portraits des Hommes Illustres Francois qui sont Peints dans la Galerie du Palais Cardinal de Richelieu' (1660). The book reproduces the portraits of great men hanging in Richelieu's 'Galerie des hommes illustres' by Simon Vouet and Philippe de Champaigne (although only four of the original paintings survive). The final 'illustrious figure' was Richelieu himself.

The bridge was designed for Napoleon but built until five years after his fall; however it retained the 17 arches (the number of letters in the name 'Napoléon Bonaparte') and the white medallions in honour of the emperor above each pillar.

Charles de Bourbon (1566-1612), Count of Soissons, first cousin of Henri IV, best known for being Samuel de Champlain's patron in his attempt to colonise Canada. He is shown in armour within an alcove with superb architectural details, a strap-work cartouche for a title left blank. On the reverse is a German-text biography relating to another portrait, within an ornate woodcut frame. Published in Jacob Schrenck von Notzing's 'Der aller Durchleuchtigisten und Grossmächtigen Kayser, Durchleuchtigisten unnd Großmächtigen Königen'.

Antoine de Bourbon-Bueil (1607-1632), Count of Moret, was the legitimised son of the French King Henry IV (1553-1610) and his mistress Jacqueline de Bueil (1558-1651). He conspired with Gaston d'Orleans against the policy for the establishment of a strong Royal Government, and took part in the rebellion led by himself and the Duke of Montmorency against King Louis XIII, which led to the Battle of Castelnaudary. He was wounded during the battle, but his body was never found, and legend had it that he survived and carried on the life of a hermit in Anjou.

François-Régis de La Bourdonnaye, Comte de La Bretèche (1767-1839), politician. Bourdonnaye was elected deputy of Maine-et-Loire in 1815 and took an extreme right position in the royalist party. In his political career, which lasted until 1830, he favoured harsh punishments for those who had occupied prominent positions during the Hundred Days under Napoleon in 1815, further reducing the number of citizens entitled to vote, and fought against laws on personal freedoms and the press.

Eugène Henri Brisson (1835-1912) was a French statesman, Prime Minister of France for a period in 1885 until 1886 and again in 1898. He was a member of the extreme Left, he did however propose amnesty for the condemned but it was voted down. He was also a prominent figure in exposing the Panama scandals. In June of 1898 he formed a cabinet when the country was violently excited over the Dreyfus affair. The Dreyfus affair was a political scandal that divided France in the 1890s and the early 1900s. It involved the conviction for treason of Captain Alfred Dreyfus (1859-1935), a French artillery officer of Alsatian Jewish descent, who was sentenced to life for allegedly having communicated French military secrets to the German Embassy in Paris.

Mary, called Mary the Rich (1457 - 1482), was suo jure Duchess of Burgundy from 1477 - 1482. She wears a veil and a cross pendant, set in an oval surrounded by an ornamental border with garlands. As the only child of Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy, and his wife Isabella of Bourbon, Mary was the heiress to the vast Burgundian domains in France and the Low Countries upon her father's death in the Battle of Nancy on 5 January 1477. Her mother had died in 1465, but Mary was on very good terms with her stepmother Margaret of York, whom Charles married in 1468. Plate 6 from a series of thirteen 'Duces Burgundiae' published by Pieter Soutman (1580 - 1657).

A half portrait of Cardinal Antonio Barberini (1608-1671) in an oval garland of oak leaves atop a plinth decorated with a coat of arms. He wears typical clerical dress with skull cap and the isignia of the Order of the Saint-Eprit. Antonio was an influential figure of the House of Barberini, which helped shape the politics, religion art and music of 17th century Italy. His uncle was appointed Pope Urban VIII in 1623 and elevated Antonio and his brothers to Cardinal.

Jacques de Castelnau-Bochetel (1620-58), lieutenant general of the king's armies during the Thirty Years War. In 1658, he took the fort of Leon near Dunkirk from the Spaniards and began strenghening work on the fortifications. During an inspection he was shot by a musket which lodged in his body. The king rewarding the capture of Leon by making Castelnau marshal of France, but he died of his wound a month later, aged only 38 years old.

The French Catholic League marching around Notre Dame in Paris, protesting against the Calvinist Henri IV (Henri of Navarre) during the Wars of Religion (1562-98). Eventually Henri converted to Catholicism and was accepted as the rightful king of France. A reversed copy of an engraving by Pieter van den Keere, published by Cornelis Danckerts c.1625, after François Bunel le Jeune (1522-99), a painter in the service of Henri IV.

A portrait taken from a bust of Joseph Chalier (1747-93) who was a French lawyer and revolutionary politician. It is apparently a reissue of a portait of Chalier that Jean Joseph François Tassaert engraved, originally attributed to painter Jacques Philippe Caresme. This version has the title changed, Henriette-Félicité Tassaert as painter, and the revolutionary symbols in the borders removed.

Figures in the grounds of the Château de Chantilly in the town of Chantilly, France, to the north of Paris. Partially destroyed during the French Revolution and rebuilt in the 1870s, the chateau is now owned by the Institut de France, and houses the Musée Condé, which is one of the finest art galleries in the country. Numbered '14' upper right. A copy of the print by Jacques Rigaud (1681 - 1754), in his 'Recueil choisi des plus belles vues des palais, châteaux et maisons royales de Paris et des environs'.

Engraving with small margins. 320 x 250mm (12½ x 9¾"). Fine impression.
Charles V (1643-90), Duke of Lorraine but not allowed to rule, as Lorraine was under French occupation during his lifetime. He entered Habsburg service, becoming one of their most successful generals, defeating the Turks at the Siege of Vienna, 1683. He died suddenly in 1690. According to Voltaire, Louis XIV paid tribute to him with the words "I have lost the greatest, wisest and most generous of my enemies". The portrait was engraved by Robert Nanteuil, the most celebrated of French 17th century portrait engravers, published in his 'Portraits de Nanteuil Tome I'.
