The Death of Ananias [parallel text in Latin]
The Death of Ananias [parallel text in Latin] Act. Chap. V.
Raphael Urbin Pinxit. E. Kirkall Fecit.
Mezzotint printed in blue, scarce; platemark 360 x 515mm (14¼ x 20¼"). Crease through centre; several tears; glued to backing sheet.
The death of Ananias, struck down in front of the Apostles gathered on a platform at centre. Ananias and his wife Sapphira were, according to the Acts of the Apostles, members of the Early Christian church in Jerusalem. Ananias dropped dead suddenly after attempting to deceive the Holy Spirit by withholding part of the profit from the sale of a piece of land. Engraved from one of the famous cartoons executed by Raphael (1483 - 1520) for a series of tapestries for the Sistine Chapel, which were bought by Charles I. The cartoons were placed in Hampton Court Palace in 1699 and are now on permanent display at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. The first set of engravings of the cartoons were produced by Nicolas Dorigny between 1711-1719, after which several other sets were made. This mezzotint is by Elisha Kirkall (1681/2-1742), one of the most distinctive of British engravers. Often printed in a blue-green ink which itself was innovative at a time when almost all British prints were still printed in black, Kirkall used the mezzotint technique which in the 17th and 18th century was used predominantly for portraits and domestic subjects, and used it to render a much wider range of subjects.
Ex: Collection of the Late Hon. C. Lennox-Boyd; for Dorigny's engraving of the same Raphael cartoon, see. ref. 14717.

[Roman statue said to be the Empress Matilda, with child and dolphin]
[by Elisha Kirkall.]
Scarce mezzotint. 365 x 215mm (14¼ x 8½"), with very large margins. Tear at bottom slightly inside platemark; creasing; foxing lower left.
Unusual mezzotint by Elisha Kirkall (1681/2-1742), one of the most distinctive of British engravers. Kirkall used the mezzotint technique which in the 17th and 18th century was used predominantly for portraits and domestic subjects, and used it to render a range of subjects usually represnted in line engravings at the time, including naval and topographical subjects. This print, with its large uninked areas, is an very unusual subject to depict in mezzotint. The British Museum's impression, from the collection of Hans Sloane, has an inscription in Sloane's hand: 'Empress Matilda / The statue is in the Palace at Kensington given by Mr Davenant'.

[19 military subjects by and after Charles Parrocel]
[19 military subjects by and after Charles Parrocel]
Parrossel Pinx Sculp
A Paris chez M.me Marel Rue St Jacques 39 [c.1740]
Nineteen etchings with original stitching, each sheet 305 x 225mm (12 x 9). Mint condition, very large margins. Mint condition.
Volume of military prints designed by Charles Parrocel (1688-1752), twelve of which are etched by J.G. Wille and the remainder by Parrocel himself. The set appears to be made up of prints from two different publications, 'Recueil de 19 Planches Différentes études de Soldats' (etched by Parrocel) and 'Reitres et Lansquenets' (etched by Wille after Parrocel). Like his father Joseph, Parrocel was principally a painter of battles and hunts. He was present at several battles during the War of the Austrian Succession which he intended to depict in a series of pictures for the chateau of Choisy (although he only completed two, now at Versailles).

R.K.P. 1803.
Pen lithograph, rare; sheet 235 x 325mm (9¼ x 12¾"). Hinged to original aquatint mount (watermarked J. Whatman 1801), platemark 330 x 425mm (13 x 16").
One of the twelve pen lithographs from 'Specimens of Polyauthography', the first set of artist's lithographs ever published (by Philipp André in 1803). The new medium allowed artists to draw directly onto a prepared stone, allowing artists to make prints which arguably resembled drawings more than any earlier printmaking technique. Unlike many printmaking techniques, lithography required no special training as artists could work directly onto the plate and leave specialist printers to actually make the prints. For this reason many artists who were not trained printmakers (such as Géricault and Delacroix) often worked in lithography. By Robert Ker Porter (1777-1842), painter, writer and diplomat. Porter made his name painting large military scenes such as 'The Storming of Seringapatam' (ex. 1800, later destroyed in a fire), and the subject of this print reflects the usual subject matter of Porter's work at this time. In 1805 he was invited by Alexander I to paint historical murals for the admiralty in St Petersburg and from 1805-25 spent much of his time in Russia (he married a Russian princess in 1812). Porter published various writings on Russia (illustrated by prints made from his own sketches), and after later serving as British Consul in Venezuela he died and was buried in St Petersburg.
For Porter's Russian sketches, see refs. 34447, 34448 etc; Ex: Collection of the Late Hon. C. Lennox-Boyd.
