[Isabella Clara Eugenia in the habit of the Order of St Clare]
[Isabella Clara Eugenia in the habit of the Order of St Clare]
[Etched by Andrew Geddes after Anthony van Dyck]
Etching with very large margins, platemark 225 x 150mm (8¾ x 6"). 'Printed by E Lumsden' in pencil lower right.
Isabella, daughter of Philip II and ruler of the Spanish Netherlands (1566-1633) with her husband Albert. After Albert's death she became a nun, in which habit she is shown here. Etched by the Scottish painter and etcher Andrew Geddes (1783-1844) after a portrait by van Dyck (Turin, Galleria Sabauda). The Oxford DNB states that 'as an etcher Geddes ranks higher than as a painter; his plates may be regarded as among the very earliest examples in modern British art of the brilliancy, concentration, and spirited selection of line proper to a ‘painter's-etching’'. This impression was printed by the printmaker and author Ernest Lumsden, who must have acquired the plate.

Jorge Juan y Santacilia (1713-1773) the Spanish mathematician, scientist, naval officer and mariner. In 1734, King Philip V of Spain asked Juan and fellow scientist Antonio de Ulloa to join the French Geodesic Mission organised by the French Academy of Sciences from Paris, under the command of the astronomer Louis Godin. The mission was to measure the length of a degree of meridian arc at the Equator in South America and to determine the roundness of the Earth. He discovered that the Earth is not perfectly spherical but is oblate. He also successfully measured the heights of the Andes using a barometer. For his work and discoveries in Ecuador and Peru he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. In 1757 he founded the Royal Astronomical Observatory of Madrid. Print based upon the bust portrait made by the sculptor Felipe de Castro for Jorge Juan's tomb in the church of St Martin, Madrid.

A. Maurin 1833 [in image]. Lith. de Lemercier rue du Four S.G. No.35
Paris chez Chaillou Editeur rue St Honoré No. 140
Lithograph, image 175 x 125mm (7 x 5"). Wove paper; uncut sheet; foxing to margins; publisher's blindstamp.
Maria Christina of the Two Sicilies (1806-78), Queen consort of Spain (1829-33) and Regent of Spain (1833-40). Maria Christina married the Spanish king Ferdinand VII in 1829, becoming regent for her daughter Isabella (the future Queen Isabella II of Spain). During the Carlist Wars (which ensued when Isabella's uncle Infante Carlos, Count of Molina tried to seize power), Maria Christina retained the throne for her daughter. Soon after the death of Ferdinand VII in 1833, Maria Christina secretly married a royal guard, Agustín Fernando Muñoz (1808-73), as to remarry publicly would have forfeited her regency. Eventually, the marriage became public and, as her position became increasingly intolerable, Maria Christina renounced the regency and left Spain with Muñoz, spending the remainder of her life in France. From a series of portraits by lithographer Antoine Maurin dit l'aîné (1793 - 1860).
For Isabella II as a child, see ref. 19410.

Dubois ad vivum pinxit anno 1800. Ferdin.s Selma del. et sculp.
Engraving very scarce. Image 260 x 180mm (10¼ x 7"). Slight creasing.
Don Jose de Mazarredo y Salazar de Muñatones Cortázar (1745-1812), considered to be one of the best Spanish naval commanders of all time. In 1780, with the Spanish and French siding against Britain in the American War of Independence, he inflicted a huge blow on Britain's war efforts by attacking a convoy en route to Florida and capturing 55 out of the 63 ships and 3000 soldiers and sailors, along with their cargo of 80,000 muskets, many field guns, 300 barrels of gunpowder, more than £1,000,000 in gold and silver and uniforms for more than a dozen regiments. During the French Revolutionary Wars Mazarredo initially had some success but he antagonised Napoleon, whose plans he called 'imperialistic and despotic', and was dismissed from the navy. Besides his wartime activities Mazarredo studied and taught naval theory. In 1778, as commander of the ship of the line San Juan Bautista, he compiled hydrographic surveys in the Iberian Peninsula, contributing to the creation of a Maritime Atlas. He also surveyed ports of South America. A large map is open on the table showing Australia.
From a scrapbook compiled by Rev. Willaim Bradford (1780-1857), Chaplain and war artist during the Peninsula Wars.

[Philip IV of Spain]
Vandyke. Geddes fc.
Etching with very large margins, platemark 230 x 155mm (8¾ x 6"). 'Printed by E Lumsden' in pencil lower right.
Portrait of Philip IV (1605-1665), king of Spain and Portgual. He is remembered for his patronage of the arts, including such artists as Diego Velazquez, and his rule over Spain during the challenging period of the Thirty Years War (1618-48). Etched after a portrait by van Dyck, by the Scottish painter and etcher Andrew Geddes (1783-1844). The Oxford DNB states that 'as an etcher Geddes ranks higher than as a painter; his plates may be regarded as among the very earliest examples in modern British art of the brilliancy, concentration, and spirited selection of line proper to a ‘painter's-etching’'. This plate was one of ten published by Geddes in 1826.
