Raphael d'Urbin pinx.t
London. Printed for John Bowles in Cornhil, & Carington Bowles in St Pauls Church Yard.
Seven mezzotints with very large margins, each platemark approx 260 x 350mm (10¼ x 13¾"). Minor damage to margins but generally good.
Raphael was commissioned by Pope Leo X to design a set of large designs for tapestries to cover the lower walls of the Sistine Chapel. Since 1865 they have been on loan from the Royal Collection to London's Victoria & Albert Museum, where they are permanently displayed together. The seven engravings are: The Miraculous Draught of Fishes; Christ's Charge to Peter; The Lame Man Healed by Peter & John; The Death of Ananias; Elymas the Sorcerer, Struck with Blindness; Paul and Barnabas at Lystra; and Paul Preaching at Athens.
For the cartoons as displayed at Hampton Court, see ref. 16693; for engravings from the first set made in England, see refs 14715 and 14720. Ex: Collection of The Hon. C. Lennox-Boyd.

El Escorial in Madrid, the historial royal residence of the King of Spain, in particular Philip II. It served as a monastery, royal palace and tomb. It was King Philip's reaction to the Protestant Reformation, providing lodgings for the Hieronymite monks. Its structure is based on descriptions of Solomon's temple. Philip's most important contribution to the building was the donation of his personal collection of documents providing material for what was to become one of Europe's finest libraries.
