This is a small arch in the Forum Boarium [the cattle Market] dedicated to Septimus Severus and his family, not to be confused with the great triple arch in the Forum Romanum. It is more often known as the Arco degli Argentari [the Arch of the Money Changers].

Through the Arch of Drusus one can see the Porta Capena, a gate in the Servian wall and the start of the Appian Way. Built by Appius Claudius in 312 BC as far as Capua, it was later extended to Benvenitum and then to Brundusium.

The Acqua Vergine aquaduct was built by Marcus Agrippa, supporter and later heir to Augustus, in 19 BC. It is said to be the purest water in Rome and was originally intended to supply Agrippa's Baths, but had other outlets as well. It supplies the Trevi Fountain, fountains in Piazza Navona and di Spagna.

This archway which honoured the consuls, must once have been freestanding as it is not attached to either of the walls. However, Nero used it to carry his aquaduct, which branched off the Acqua Claudia and supplied his constructions on the Palatine hill, and over the wall one can see the piers marching away.
