A view of the city of Funchal, the largest city and capital of the island of Madeira. Plate from the scarce volume 'Views in the Madeiras executed on Stone' (1827) by the Rev James Bulwer (1794-1879), antiquary and amateur watercolourist (he was taught by John Sell Cotman while at Cambridge). This lithograph was made by the well-known William Westall (1781-1850), who unlike many printmakers working from travellers' topographical views, had visited Madeira himself (in 1801 and 1805).

A fine panorama from a set of Lake District views engraved by William Westall (1781-1850) from his own drawings. Westall was a versatile artist who embraced a variety of media and travelled widely: between 1801 and 1805 he was abroad, having signed up as landscape draughtsman on Flinders' voyage to New Holland (Australia) but also spending extended periods of time in China and India on his way back to England.

A wall of columnar basalt rock by a river. From John Herbert Caddy's 'Scenery of the Windward and Leeward Islands', planned as a four-volume work, but only the first was published. Caddy (1801-83) was posted to the West Indies twice, to Tobago in 1828 and to St Lucia in 1833, transferring to St Vincent in 1834, the year that slavery was abolished in the British colonies.

A view from the summit of Calton Hill, looking towards Arthur's Seat and Salisbury Crags, with Holyrood House and St Anthony's Chapel. On Salisbury Crags are the tents of the soldiers stationed there during George IV’s visit to Scotland in August 1822. One of four views from Calton Hill, looking north, south, east and west, after Mary Stewart (1773-1849). In 1823 she married Sir Abraham Elton (1755-1842), 5th Baronet, moving to Clevedon in Somerset, publishing views of the area as Lady Elton.
