Louis was very popular at the beginning of his reign and he earned the epithey "le Bien-Aimé", however in time the debauchery of his court, the return of the Austrian Netherlands, the cession of New France, and the defeat during the Seven Years' War, all led to Louis becoming the most unpopular king in the history of France.
