Engraved bookplate, part 18th century watermark. 160 x 115mm (6¼ x 4½") very large margins. Two tears in left margin, old ink mss. in bottom margin.
The ink manuscript describes the armorial as 'Sterne's arms', probably because of the bird above; however, although Laurence Sterne's arms is surmounted by a starling, they also include a chevron between three crosslets flory sable. Certainly these trophies appear to be too martial for a writer.

A plan of the famous ornamental gardens of Boughton House, laid out following the 'Golden Ratio' by John Montague (1690-1749), 2nd Duke of Montague, known as 'John the Planter'. The son-in-law of the Duke of Marlborough, Montagu was one of the founding governors of the Foundling Hospital, a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and the Royal Society in 1725, a Grand Master of the Premier Grand Lodge of England, a Knight of the Garter and recipient of the Order of the Bath. His London residence, Montague House, became the first home of the British Museum.

A view of St Peter Port from the sea, highlighting the new protective piers. John Henry Bastide (c.1700-70) of the Corps of Engineers was based in the Channel Islands from 1726 to 1739, maintaining the defences. Sketches he made were finished by Claude Lemprière and published as 'General and Particular Prospects of the Islands of Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney, Serc, Arm and Jethou'. From 1740 Bastide was chief engineer at Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia, with responsibility for New England. In 1745 he helped in the siege and capture of Louisbourg; in 1756 he was Director of Engineers at Minorca when the French captured Fort St Philip during the Seven Years' War; in 1758 he returned to Louisbourg, taking charge of the fort's demolition after its capture; and in 1762 he helped construct Halifax Citadel and the defences to Halifax Harbour. He was promoted to lieutenant-general five months before he died in 1770.

Engraving, sheet 445 x 350mm (17½ x 13¾"). Trimmed inside platemark; glued to backing sheet and folded. Scarce.
Pile driver for building over water, consisting of a floating platform on which horses turn a wheel which drives the pilse downwards. Later 18th century reissue by Carington Bowles, of a plate first published by its engraver, W.H. Toms, in 1748. At that time the construction on the first Westminster Bridge had been underway for nine years (and would not be completed for another two). It was probably published to capitalise on public interest in the project.
