A very large mezzotint. 640 x 880mm (25¼ x 34¾"). Trimmed close to plate top and bottom, some wear in inscription area, small tear in right margin. Rubbed top right.
Germanicus Julius Caesar (15 BC - AD 19) on his deathbed. The nephew and adopted son of Tiberius as well as a successful and popular general, his early death caused rumours of poisoning. He was the father of Caligula, grandfather of Nero and brother to Claudius, the three emperors after Tiberius. Vindobona was the camp of the Roman army at Vienna.
Tranquillo Mollo published a smaller mezzotint of the same painting in Vienna c. 1800 (BM 1877,0609.1566).

Very rare mezzotint. Sheet 740 x 515mm (29 x 20¼"). Trimmed to platemark lower edge; damaged.
Field-marshal Ernst Gideon von Loudon (1717-90), generalissimo of the Imperial Army. Briefly in the Russian army as a young man, he resigned due to lack of prospects and joined the Austrian army. He fought in the War of the Austrian Succession and Seven Years' War, after which he spent several years in retirement punctuated by recalls to service. He was also a commander in Bohemia and Moravia, served in the War of the Bavarian Succession, and the Austro-Turkish War. Engraved from a portrait by Heinrich Friedrich Füger (1751-1818), German painter who was vice-director of the Akademie der Bildensten Künste in Vienna at the time this portrait was painted in 1789. Loudon died on duty in Moravia the following year, with this print published in his memory.

A rare mezzotint, proof before letters, inscription area uncleaned. 440 x 575mm (17¼ x 22½"). Framed. Some spotting. Unexamined out of frame.
A scene from the fourth book of Ovid's Metamorphoses. The Naiad nymph Salmacis forces herself on Hermaphroditus in a pool; he pulls on her braided hair to stop her kissing him. Above Cupid aims his bow at them. On this rejection she appealed to the gods, begging them to let the pair stay together forever; the gods answered by fusing them into a deity with both male and female parts.
Not in the BM. The painting, by Francesco Albani (1578-1660), is in the Galleria Sabauda, Turin.

Fine & scarce mezzotint, platemark 520 x 335mm (20½ x 13¼"). Very large margins on 3 sides. Staining and repaired tears around title area; one tear into title area and just above. Very scarce.
Karl Philipp Fürst zu Schwarzenberg (1771-1820), Austrian field marshal. He entered the imperial cavalary in 1788, and due to his bravery he rose to become Major in 1792. In 1796 (shortly before this print was made) he was raised to the rank of General Major following his victories over the French in the battles of Amberg and Würzberg (present-day Germany). In 1804 he was created the Fürst zu Schwarzenberg and a year later after cutting his way thought the hostile lines at Ulm, he received the Commander's Cross of the Order of Maria Theresa and later in 1809 he was awarded the Order of the Golden Fleece. After a portrait by August Friedrich Oelenheinz (1745-1804), German painter also active in Switzerland and France, and published by the leading Vienna publisher Artaria.

A very large and impressive scene of Venus lying naked, holding a flute being crowned with a garland by Cupid, with a man playing the lute, reading from music. Titian painted several versions of this scene.
