Gosden was a book and printseller, publisher and sportsman, working from Piccadilly, 'The Sportsman's Repository' at 18 Bedford Street in Covent Garden and 107 St Martin's Lane at various times. He published at least three contemporary versions of this portrait. This version is a new, larger plate, engraved by Robert Charles Peter ARA (1888-1980).
