Ali Pacha de Jannina,
Ali Pacha de Jannina, chassant sur le lac de Butrinto en Mars 1819. Pl. VIII.
L. Dupré. Imp. Litho. de M.elle Formentin.
[n.d., c.1820.]
Coloured lithograph. Sheet 355 x 515mm (14 x 20½"), publisher's blind stamp.
Ali Pasha of Yannina (1740-1822), the Ottoman Albanian ruler of the western part of Rumelia, in a rowing boat with six oarsmen and bodyguard, smoking a pipe. From Louis Dupré's ''Voyage à Athènes et à Constantinople''. Lord Byron visited the court of Ai in Ioannina in 1809 and had very mixed feelings about him and his court. Ali Pasha was notorious throughout the region for the cruelties inflicted on his subjects, from torture to rape and even murder. In 1820 the tensions with the Turkish Reforms grew and after two years of fighting the Ottoman forces took hold of Ioannina forcing Ali Pasha to surrender. He was asked to surrender for beheading, which he refused and continued to fight until he was eventually shot.

He was a polymath with considerable skills as a linguist and translator, publishing many translations and commentaries on ancient tongues. Charles Cornwallis, 1st Marques Cornwallis, KG (1738-1805) was a British Army officer and colonial administrator. In the United States and Britain, he is best remembered as one of the leading generals in the American War of Independence. His 1781 surrender to a combined American-French force at the Siege of Yorktown is often incorrectly considered the end of the war; in fact it continued for a further two years. Despite this defeat, he retained the confidence of successive British governments and continued to enjoy an active career. In India, where he served two terms as governor general, he is remembered for promulgating the Permanent Settlement. As Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, he argued for Catholic emancipation and oversaw the response to the 1798 Irish Rebellion and a French invasion of Ireland.

A half length portrait of Stanislaus August Poniatowski (1732 - 1798), inclined slightly to left, with powdered hair, fur coat with a star of the White Eagle, and a white ruffle. In an oval. Poniatowski was the last King and Grand Duke of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth (1764–95) and was recognised as a great patron of the arts and sciences and a supporter of progressive reforms. Arriving at the Russian imperial court in Saint Petersburg in 1755, he became romantically involved with the twenty-six-year-old Catherine Alexeievna (the future Empress Catherine the Great). With her support, in 1764 he was elected king of Poland. Against expectations, he attempted to reform and strengthen the ailing Commonwealth. His efforts were met with external opposition from Prussia, Russia and Austria, all interested in keeping the Commonwealth weak. The reforms were overthrown following a succession of wars which led to the Partitions of Poland, marking the end of the Commonwealth. Stripped of all meaningful power, Poniatowski abdicated in November 1795 and spent the last years of his life in semi-captivity in Saint Petersburg.

An unfinished transparency print of the French flagship L'Orient's on fire at night during the Battle of the Nile. When the magazine exploded the shock wave caused a pause in the battle lasting ten minutes, as the ships had to deal with burning debris flying everywhere. Transparency prints are usually finished with colour and varnish on the reverse so that when held up to the light the scene changes. Edward Orme invented the process c.1794, and Charles Turner engraved the first such plate; Turner's diary lists this plate as one of the transparency prints he engraved for Orme.
