[Abingdon Old Gaol] View of the New County Prison, at Abingdon, Berks.
[Abingdon Old Gaol] View of the New County Prison, at Abingdon, Berks.
Drawn by W. Waite. Engraved by H. Meyer.
[n.d., c.1810.]
Rare aquatint. 420 x 485mm (16½ x 19"). Narrow bottom margin, small tear entering inscription area.
A view of Abingdon Old Gaol, probably published before the prison opened in 1812. Taken from the banks of the Thames (with an angler), it also shows Abingdon Bridge. On the opposite side is a wharf, with a barge, scale beam and crane. The gaol was built by Daniel Harris (c. 1761-1840), the Surveyor and Gaoler of Oxford Prison, and Sir Jeffry Wyatville RA (1766-1840), architect who worked on alterations for both Chatsworth House and Windsor Castle. It was largely superseded by the larger prison at Reading (1844) and closed in 1868. After being used as a grain store, slum dwellings and a leisure centre, it has now been converted into flats.

Sir Richard Arkwright, late of Cromford Derbyshire,
Sir Richard Arkwright, late of Cromford Derbyshire, The Eminent Inventor of the Machinery used in Spinning Cotton, by means of Rollers [...]
Painted by J. Wright Engraved by H. Meyer [c.1800]
Stipple engraving on india, platemark 225 x 150mm (9 x 6") very large margins.
Sir Richard Arkwright (1732-92), inventor of cotton-spinning machinery and cotton manufacturer. The archetypal self-made man, Arkwright went from a barber's apprentice in Bolton to a key figure in the proto-industrial north and midlands whose worth at his death was some £500,000. An ambitious inventor, Arkwright improved cotton manufacturing machinery, set up up the Cromford Cotton Mills in the then unexploited district of Cromford near Matlock (for a view of pre-Arkwright Cromford see ref.29386), and later ventured into hosiery knitting as well. Engraving after the portrait of c.1789-90 by Joseph Wright of Derby (private collection). Arkwright occupies an important place in Wright's work, not only in the portraits he painted of Arkwright and his family, but also because of the series of views he painted of the area where Arkwright established his empire. Not shown in this engraving is the model of the spinning frame Arkwright claimed to have invented, which in Wright's painting is on a table beside the sitter's left hand. Benedict Nicolson suggests that because aspersions had been cast on his qualifications as an inventor, Arkwright preferred to have this aspect of his work emphasised, rather than being painted with, say, a plan of his industrial empire- an achievement which was in no doubt.

Edwin Pearson Excudit. [n.d., c.1840.]
Stipple. 279 x 215mm. 11 x 8½".
Thomas Bewick (1753-1828), wood-engraver. At the age of fourteen Bewick was apprenticed to Ralph Beilby, an engraver in Newcastle. He devoted himself to engraving on wood, and is credited with reviving this art and establishing it as a major form of printmaking. Bewick developed the technique of cutting a design into hardwood cut across, rather than with, the grain, using a sharp tool called a bruin. In 1775, he received a payment from the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce for a wood engraving of the Huntsman and the Old Hound. Bewick's most important works are illustrations for books such as A General History of Quadrupeds (1790) and A History of British Birds (1797 and 1804).

Thomas Day Esq.r
Thomas Day Esq.r
Engraved by Henry Meyer from a Picture by Wright of Derby
Published March 30th 1820 by R. Hunter No 12 St Paul's Church Yard London
Stipple engraving, sheet 215 x 130mm (8½ x 5"). Slight foxing.
Thomas Day (1748-89), author and political campaigner. Day was part of the Lunar Society of Birmingham, and his research included adopting two girls from foundling hospitals and trying to educate (in accordance with Rousseau's ideas) one of them into becoming a suitable wife. The project was unsuccessful, but one of the women, Sabrina Sidney, later married Day's friend John Bicknell. With Bicknell, Day wrote the best-selling narrative poem 'The Dying Negro', which told the story of a runaway slave. Day supported American independence and his poem 'The Devoted Legions' (1776) was a scathing indictment of the British government's actions. Day also made an astonishing reputation as a writer of instructive children's fiction such as 'The History of Little Jack' (1787). Day and his wife Esther resided at Anningsley in Surrey from 1783, which they ran primarily as a philanthropic concern. With the welfare of its workers the principal concern, the Days laboured to 'create a new Jerusalem', a quixotic project typical of this 'holder and practitioner of strange ideas...a strange bundle of contradictions' (DNB). Engraved after a portrait by Joseph Wright of Derby (National Portrait Gallery), which had itself been commissioned by Day's friend Richard Lovell Edgeworth and was intended to portray Day as a 'man of feeling'.

Sir Francis Drake (1540 - 1596), admiral and circumnavigator, leaning on a globe. The most famous of all English seafarers, Drake earned his fame and fortune through his skilful seamanship and outstandingly successful piracy. His circumnavigation of the globe from 1577-81 involved a number of very profitable raids on Spanish ships and ports. Drake's increasingly frequent and serious attacks during the 1580s were an important factor contributing to Philips II's decision to launch the Armada against England in 1588. Drake served as vice-admiral of the English fleet which defeated the Armada. He died of dysentery on an unsuccessful raid on San Juan, Puerto Rico. For Thomas Birch's 'Heads of the Illustrious Persons of Great Britain' 1743-52. Stipple. 276 x 215mm. Rare.
Charles James Fox (1749-1806), styled The Honourable from 1762, as a prominent British Whig statesman whose parliamentary career spanned thirty-eight years. Fox was the first foreign secretary of the United Kingdom and vocal supporter of American independence. Also known for his rivalry with William Pitt the Younger and a staunch opponent of George III he was reckless in politics as at the gaming tables. Fox held office briefly as a Tory under Lord North then led the opposition. Fox strongly criticised Lord North and the conduct of the American war, viewing the cause of the American patriots as a struggle for liberty against oppressive external power. He supported the revolutionaries of the United States, often dressing in the colours of George Washington's army. He championed America’s cause, denouncing taxation of Americans without their consent. Reform was a passion but as a supporter of the revolutionary cause in France, his credibility was diminished from 1792 by the excesses of the French revolutionaries.

Selina, Countess of Huntingdon.
Selina, Countess of Huntingdon.
H. Meyer Sculpt.
Published by Ogles, Duncan & Cochran, Paternoster Row, June 1st 1815
Stipple, sheet 190 x 115mm (7½ x 4½").
Selina Hastings, countess of Huntingdon (1707-91), founder of the Countess of Huntingdon's Connexion. After an initially close relationship with John Wesley, she moved towards the ideas of George Whitefield before his departure for America in 1751. In the 1760s the countess established several chapels, and a college, Trevecca, in a renovated Brecknockshire farmhouse. Whitefield had left the countess the Bethesda orphanage in his will, and she organised a mission to America, which so infuriated the Georgians that Bethesda was burnt to the ground. Subsequent plans in America were rejected and her Georgia property was eventually confiscated. In 1783 the rigidly Calvinistic Countess of Huntingdon's Connexion was formed when several Trevecca students were ordained.
