Time clipping Cupid's Wings.
Time clipping Cupid's Wings.
London [n.d. c.1790]
Mezzotint, fine impression. 340 x 250mm (13½ x 9¾"). Trimmed to plate and each edge lined with paper mount. Some markings along the top edge.
A scene depicting Time, an old winged man, taking clippers to the young Cupid's wings, who tries to struggle out of his grasp. The personified image of Time has its roots in the Greek association of time ('chronos') with Cronos, their god of agriculture, which is why he is often depicted with a scythe, as here. It is possible that Van Dyck's arresting characterisation of Time derives from Brozino's depiction of Time in 'Venus, Cupid, Folly, and Time', who somewhat sinisterly gazes upon the ambiguous scene of Cupid and Venus. Possibly Van Dyck's scene asserts with more force that time is fleeting to the detriment of love. In a mezzotint portrait of James McAdell by Richard Earlom (after a drawing by McArdell), McArdell holds a scraper in his hand over a copper plate before him of 'Time clipping Cupid's Wings' (1771).

Mezzotint, platemark 455 x 330mm (18 x 13"). Creases at top, small margins.
David Garrick (1717-1779), English actor and theatrical manage, in the role of Hamlet. The most celebrated actor of his day, he did more than anyone else to change the British acting style, which prioritised energy and engagement above accuracy and control. As a manager (primarily of the Drury Lane Theatre, Covent Garden) he presided over the creation of Shakespeare as national poet and icon, while shaping the texts to suit the demands of his patrons. The supremacy of Drury Lane during Garrick's management was not to be matched until Irving's reign at the Lyceum in the following century, and in the names of pubs and streets, and the famous Garrick Club, Covent Garden is filled with echoes of one of the greatest men to have occupied the area. This print illustrates the moment when Hamlet is confronted by the ghost of his dead father, the king of Denmark, who was murdered by his brother Claudius. Engraved after a portrait by Benjamin Wilson (1721 - 1788), portrait painter and scientist, etcher, occasional mezzotinter and collector of Rembrandt who was appointed Hogarth's successor as Serjeant-Painter to the King.

Rare mezzotint, sheet 315 x 230mm (12½ x 9"). Trimmed inside platemark lower edge, losing publication line; glued to backing sheet.
William Harvey (1578-1657), physician and discoverer of the circulation of the blood. While Harvey's discoveries are now universally acknowledged, he met with much opposition during his own time. This portrait wrongly claims to be after van Dyck- more likely the source image is by Cornelis Janssens. The engraving is by James MacArdell, but he left the plate unfinished at the time of his death. This is the published state (after additional work by another hand), issued by Laurie & Whittle in 1794.

Sr. Edward Hawke, Knight of the most Honourable Order of the Bath, and Rear-Admiral of the White Squadron of His Majesties Fleet.
G. Knapton Pinx.t. J. McArdell Fecit.
[n.d c.1740.]
Mezzotint with very large margins, first state. Plate 330 x 229mm. 13 x 9".
Portrait, bust in an oval, directed to right, wearing a plain coat with sash hung diagonally from right shoulder, a badge half visible on left side, white cravat and shoulder-length wig, arms at his sides, looking towards the viewer. Edward Hawke, 1st Baron Hawke, KB (1705-1781) was a naval officer of the Royal Navy. He is best remembered for his victory over a French fleet at the Battle of Quiberon Bay in 1759, preventing a French invasion of Britain. A number of Royal Navy warships were named after him, in commemoration of this. He also served as First Lord of the Admiralty for five years between 1766 and 1771. In the Seven Years' War, Hawke replaced Admiral John Byng as commander in the Mediterranean in 1756. He blockaded Rochefort in 1757 and in 1758 he directed the blockade of Brest for six months. In 1759 Hawke was tasked with stopping a planned French invasion fleet from reaching Britain. His ships continued their close blockade of Brest. When Hawke's force was driven off station by a storm, the French fleet under Hubert de Brienne, Comte de Conflans, took advantage and left port. On 20 November 1759 he followed the French warships and during a gale he won a sufficient victory in the Battle of Quiberon Bay, when combined with Edward Boscawen's victory at Lagos, to remove the French invasion threat. He then retired from active duty, and given the honorary rank of Vice-Admiral of Great Britain in November 1765. He was made First Lord of the Admiralty in December 1766 and served until January 1771. He was made a baron in 1776.
