Allegorical scene in which Hymen, the god of marriage ceremonies, burns the arrows of Cupid, who stands bound and blindfolded. Musical instruments to right. Engraved by the Milan engraver Giuseppe Longhi (1766-1831) from a subject painted twice by the Mannerist painter Guido Reni (1575-1642). One canvas is now in Dijon (Musée des Beaux-Arts), and the darker copy in Genoa (Palazzo Spinola) is called Sacred and Profane Love.

Scarce etching, fine early impression; platemark 160 x 135mm (6¼ x 5¼") very large margins. Slight foxing.
Etching by Giuseppe Longhi (1766-1831), Italian printmaker and writer who did much to promote the Neo-classical movement in Milan. In 1801 he became professor of engraving at the Accademia di Brera in Milan, and also wrote influential texts on printmaking. Impressions of this print in the British Museum are lettered 'Longhi f' rather than the scratched 'G.L. f' on this impression.
