Large folio, original cloth gilt; lithographic frontis. portrait on chine collé, lithographed title with vignette illustration on chine collé and 20 lithographs on chine collé, interleaved. Base of spine worn, inner hinges strained, some damp staining.
A series of prints after Richard Parkes Bonington (1802-28), a landscape painter whose career was cut short by his death from tuberculosis aged 25. The lithographer, James Duffield Harding (1798-1863) made significant advances to the technique of lithography.

A view of Clifton Gorge with a suspension bridge designed by Captain Samuel Brown (1776-1852) for the second of two design competitions, eventually won by 24-year-old Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Although Brown describes himself as Royal Navy he was already a successful enginneer, having constructed in 1820 the Union Bridge in Tweed, the longest wrought iron suspension bridge for vehicles in the world and the first in the United Kingdom.

Colotlán, in Jalisco, Mexico. A plate from 'The Sketch Book of Capt.n G.F. Lyon R.N.' Captain George Francis Lyon (1795-1832) went to sea at the age of thirteen and wrote and illustrated books on his travels, which included crossing the Sahara, serving under Parry as commander of the 'Hecla' and following Frankin into Hudson's Bay. He went to Mexico in 1826 as commissioner of the Real del Monte and Bolaños Mining Companies, dying on a voyage from Buenos Aires to London.

Sir John Woolmore (1756-1838) was a captain with the East India Company and during his long career he sailed several East Indiamen to the Far East from London. He was also one of the leading figures behind the establishment of the East India Dock Company. He served as Deputy Master of the Trinity House from 1825 until 1834.
