Portrait of Theodore Edward Hook (1788 - 1841), novelist and wit. Noted for his ebullient personality and wayward lifestyle, Hook procured post as accountant-general in Mauritius, 1813, but was later imprisoned for mismanagement of funds. He became editor of the anti-Radical John Bull, 1820, and enjoyed popular success for his novels collected as Sayings and Doings, 1826-29. His last years, in his own words, were spent 'done up in purse, in mind, and in body'. Priscilla Horton (1818 - 1895) was a well-known singer and actress in 19th century London, famous with her husband, Thomas German Reed, for their refined entertainments which became popular with middle-class audiences who did not otherwise go to the theatre. The print shows her as Ariel, in the 1838 production of Shakespeare's The Tempest. By Richard James Lane (1800 - 1872).

Portrait of James Sheridan Knowles (1784 - 1862), the Irish dramatist and actor, born in Cork. He first published a ballad entitled 'The Welsh Harper', which, set to music, was very popular. His talents secured him the friendship of William Hazlitt, who introduced him to Charles Lamb and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. In 1810 he wrote 'Leo', in which Edmund Kean acted with great success. In William Tell (1825), Knowles wrote for William Charles Macready one of his favourite parts. In 1832, his best-known play, The Hunchback, was produced at Covent Garden. Portrait of Richard Monckton Milnes, 1st Baron Houghton (1809 - 1885), politician and poet. While at Trinity College, Cambridge, Milnes joined the progressive Apostles Club, which included the poets Alfred Tennyson and Arthur Henry Hallam. Milnes entered Parliament as an MP in 1837 and was actively involved in issues of copyright and the establishment of juvenile reformatories. He was made a peer in 1863. His early poetry led many to regard him as one of the most promising writers of his generation, but he is better remembered as an influential member of literary society and as a patron of writers. He published the Life, Letters, and Literary Remains of John Keats (1848), secured a pension for Tennyson and was an early champion of the poet Algernon Charles Swinburne. Portrait of Lord Alfred Henry Paget (1816 - 1888), exhibiting subtle differences in dress and hairstyle with D'Orsay's portrait observed from life one year later (see item Ref: 21827). For many years Paget was equerry and clerk-marshal of the royal household. He rose to the rank of general in the 7th Hussars on the retired list in 1881. He represented Lichfield in the Whig interest from 1837 to 1865. He died on board his yacht Violet at Inverness on 24 August 1888.
