An elevation of one of the great classical temples of Baalbek, probably either the Temple of Jupiter or Bacchus, published in Robert Wood's 'The Ruins of Balbec, otherwise Heliopolis, in Coelosyria'. Italian architect Giovanni Battista Borra accompanied Wood on a trip through Syria 1750-1; the resulting drawings of the classical ruins were very influential on architects including Robert Adam.

John Radcliffe (1652-171 was a physician, unorthodox in that he learned by practice and not by books. After his graduation from Oxford and once he had obtained his M.D. in 1862, he moved to London. He enjoyed great popularity there and became Royal Physician to William and Mary.

The King's Mews (or Royal Mews), as rebuilt by William Kent in 1732. The buildings lasted just short of a century, being demolished as part of the Trafalgar Square scheme in 1830, with the National Gallery replacing it. Kent (1685 - 1748) introduced the Palladian style of architecture to England, building Chiswick House in 1729.

An illustration to John Gay's poem of the same name which tells the tale of Susan, whose eyes are black from crying. The scene shows Susan standing in a boat heading away from the ship. Gay's poem was set to music by Richard Leveridge and became a popular song amongst sailors. Originally published 1743, this example was issued by Francis West, along with many other Bowles plates. Australian & American interest.
