John Harrison Curtis (1778-1860), otologist. 'In the early nineteenth century the management of aural conditions not infrequently fell into the hands of certain practitioners who were neither interested in diagnosis nor concerned with the indications for their treatment. Curtis was the most notorious of these; he had been a dispenser in the navy, but had no medical qualifications. His ideas and practice were a mixture of charlatan and of applied common sense' (DNB). Curtis' 'Treatise on the Physiology and Diseases of the Ear' (1817) ran to four editions. Establishing himself in a large property on Soho Square in London, Curtis' clients included George IV and the duke and duchess of Gloucester. In 1816 he founded the first specialist ear hospital in Britain on nearby Carlisle Street. He later squandered his fortune, fled to the Isle of Man to escape his debtors, and died in an asylum.

Charles-Geneviève-Louis-Auguste-André-Timothée d'Éon de Beaumont (1728 - 1810), usually known as the Chevalier d'Eon, bust in an oval frame. He wears a lace-trimmed cape over his gown, a ribbon around his neck and a lace cap, with pearl earrings and military order attached to a rosette on his breast. A French diplomat, soldier and Freemason who lived the first half of his life as a man and the second half as a woman. Living in England in 1785, he lost his pension after the French Revolution and had to sell his library. In 1792 he sent a letter to the French National Assembly, offering to lead a division of women soldiers against Austria, but the offer was rebuffed. He participated in fencing tournaments until he was seriously wounded, in 1796. After a trial in 1777 about his actual sex he wore female attire until his death. Surgical examination proved him male. Engraving after John Condé, published in 'La Belle Assemblée' of 1810.

He entered the British Royal Navy in 1798 as first-class volunteer, and was appointed lieutenant in April 1807. In 1810, while on the Guerriere off the coast of the Americas, he was invalided by an illness which resulted in total loss of sight.

Thomas Romney Robinson (1792-1882) as a young boy. Romney Robinson was an astronomer and physicist and served as the longtime director of Armagh Astronomical Observatory. He is also noted for his invention of a device used for measuring the speed of the wind, the Robinson Anemometer (1846). The crater Robinson on the Moon is named after him.

Catherine Stephens (1794-1882), soprano known as 'Kitty'. She was Susanna in the first London production of the 'Marriage of Figaro', opposite John Liston, 1819 and Effie Deans at the premier of 'Heart of Midlothian' the same year. She retired in 1835 and three years later became the second wife of George Capel-Coningsby, 5th Earl of Essex, who was in his eighties and lasted just over a year.

A Vestal priestess, Tuccia, standing in front of a shrine, holds out in front of her a pan full of water, which leaks through the bottom. Two women watch from the shrine. The Vestal Virgin Tuccia was accused of having breached her vow of chastity, but she proved her innocence by carrying water in a sieve. This apparent miracle saved her life.
