Stipple in brown ink, scratched-letter proof before title. 175 x 110mm, 7 x 4¼". Trimmed to plate; slight surface scuffing around face.
Portrait of Charles-Geneviève-Louis-Auguste-André-Timothée d'Éon de Beaumont (1728 - 1810), usually known as the Chevalier d'Eon, in female costume, including lace bonnet; a Croix de Saint-Louis at his neck. A French diplomat, soldier and Freemason who lived the first half of his life as a man and the second half as a woman. Living in England in 1785, he lost his pension after the French Revolution and had to sell his library. In 1792 he sent a letter to the French National Assembly, offering to lead a division of women soldiers against Austria, but the offer was rebuffed. He participated in fencing tournaments until he was seriously wounded, in 1796. After a trial in 1777 about his actual sex he wore female attire until his death. Surgical examination proved him male. Engraving with very large margins, platemark 290 x 210mm (11½ x 8¼").
Henrietta Maria (1609-1669), Queen of Charles I, married in 1625; her Catholicism alienated many of her English subjects. She gave strong, loving support of Charles I during his troubles, and practical assistance during the Civil War by personally bringing munitions from France, and pawning her jewellery to raise funds.

Engraving after Sébastien Bourdon (Montpellier 1616- Paris 1671). After a period in Rome, Bourdon became court painter to Queen Christina in Sweden. Medical interest. Numbered 'No. 45', from "The Most Capital Paintings in England", a series of engravings in five volumes, late 1760s-1786, the first three of which (1769 to 1773) were originally published under the title Sculptura Britannica. These were a critical and financial success for the publisher John Boydell who promoted the interests of both artists, engravers and Patrons establishing a tradition in Britain for collecting prints.

The attribution to Peter Paul Rubens is incorrect: it is after the painting by Sir Anthony Van Dyck (1599-1641) now hanging in the Royal Collection. "The Most Capital Paintings in England" series of engravings in five volumes, late 1760s-1786, the first three (1769 to 1773) originally published under the title Sculptura Britannica. These were a critical and financial success for the publisher John Boydell who promoted the interests of both artists, engravers and Patrons establishing a tradition in Britain for collecting prints.
